INSPIRATION AND ADVICE
STYLISH GUYS IN FLEECE
By Navreen Mangat, 16 November 2018
While some are slightly questionable, there are items from your dad’s wardrobe (chunky trainers, practical bum bags) that deserve to be seen, and fleece is one of them. You might associate it with outdoorsy adventures – mountaineering outfitter Patagonia helped develop the first-ever fleece prototype, FYI – but right now it’s the cosy fabric for chillier days. To steer you away from full-on geography school trip, follow in the footsteps of these guys for some getup inspiration…
There’s so much going on here, we’re not sure which element we love the most. Let’s start with the textures: that super-soft fleece jacket is the stuff of chill-proof dreams, while the fuzzy hat works just as hard to add warmth. Next, we see a check clash and we’re enjoying it – go for different sizes and colours to really make an impact. Light up the look with a neon belt and you’re ready for the season ahead.
Taking a head-to-toe approach, this chap is clearly a fleece aficionado. And let’s face it, is there anything more comfortable or easier to wear than a tracksuit? Just in case there was ever any danger of this ‘fit looking a bit like your cosy pyjamas, note the taping and matching trainers for a hint of athleisure. We spy an emergency-orange tote bag slung over the shoulders, too, and we’re into it.
Smart/casj dress code
High-low dressing has been around since, well, forever, and it’s just the trick for making your fleece piece relevant again. Get yourself a pair of baggy, smart trousers and do the whole suit-and-tie thing up top, with an oversized, zipped fleece jacket as your outer layer of choice, then maximise on warmth with a funnel neck. The 90s-style white trainers and the sleek bag balance each other out nicely, too.
This fella knows he’s onto a winner with this bright colour clash. His eye-catching yellow fleece looks great on a drab winter day, with its toggle hem offering a sporty take on things. The best part? His purple trousers are served up in AW18’s equally-as-important fabric: corduroy. The printed layer peeking out underneath breaks up the blocks of colour, while the cross-body bag keeps the sportswear thing going. Very nice.
Sitting on the fence with fleece? A subtle way to dip your toe into the trend is via your accessories. Case in point: this fuzzy, leopard-print cross-body number. Props to this guy for making it clash with his tailored check coat and smart charcoal trousers, too. We’re all for the plus-ones for this look too – the cap and trainers are most welcome.
