4 FRAGRANCES TO TRY OUT
By Steven Potter, 31 October 2018
When looking for a new fragrance, it can be tricky knowing where to start. If, like me, your options stretch as far as ‘work smell’ and ‘going-out smell’, the prospect can be a little overwhelming.
So, until technology catches up and smelling through your screen becomes a thing, I figured I’d do the smelling for you. Yep, I’m taking four new fragrances for some test sprays to give you the lowdown on the freshest scents on ASOS right now.
To kick things off, we’ve got the Tommy Hilfiger eau de toilette. It’s about as American as you can get, with stateside ingredients including Florida grapefruit, Midwestern spearmint and Cape Cod cranberry. The result? A fragrance that’s fresh and invigorating on that all-important first spray, but also comes through with woody base notes as the day goes on. I’d recommend this for daily wear for its refreshing and uplifting scent (it’s ideal for that 3pm slump). The bottle is classic Hilfiger, too – minimal and refined, it's got serious on-display potential.

So, we’ve explored a daily fragrance, but what about one for those big events – like a wedding, job interview, or that all-important first date? Step up, Vera Wang For Men. This is a less-is-more kinda fragrance, and one you can’t be too heavy-handed with (as I found out the hard way). Try pulling a Jonathan from Queer Eye by applying the ‘spray, delay and walk away’ technique, which involves spritzing one or two pumps, then simply walking through the vapour cloud. It might seem a little extra, but it disperses the scent more evenly, for a less intense and well-rounded finish. I’m saving this one for when I need to impress.

Summer may be over, but don’t worry, you’re just a few sprays away from reliving those glorious sun-drenched days – in fragrance form at least. Cue Shay & Blue's Blood Orange eau de parfum. It’s a total contrast of ingredients with, you guessed it, blood orange as the top note, but at its heart and base is Nappa leather, charred wood and amber, resulting in a zesty and refreshing first wear that ages to a more mellow, woody finish. The packaging is great, too. It comes in a gift box, complete with a signature striped bow – you could almost get away with not wrapping it, which is ideal with Christmas just around the corner.
Lastly, we have another Shay & Blue fragrance – the Mandarine Light Scent Spray (which is exclusive to ASOS, btw). Presented in a handy, travel-sized 10ml bottle, it slips neatly into bags and pockets, making it ideal for on-the-go top-ups. The initial scent is mandarin (obvs), with the addition of pomelo and amber woods for a fruity-at-first and woody-by-lunch kinda vibe. And it’s formulated with essential oils, so your skin feels as good as it smells.
