INSPIRATION AND ADVICE
STYLISH GUYS IN CHECKS
By Spencer Cain, 11 October 2018
A new season brings a new attitude, and with that inevitably comes a different approach to your everyday gear. As many of us bid adieu to summer's poppin' prints in favour of more classic offerings, we're here to make a case for check. You might think you already know all there is to know about the tried-and-true pattern, but it's had a major reinvention thanks to mega-brands like Prada and Dries Van Noten. Just take a look at these five fellas for proof that check is anything but plaid out (come on, how could we resist?).
This ain't your grandfather’s suit and coat combo. For a brand-new take on swish attire, channel New York-based blogger Anthony Urbano, who elevated his pinstripe trousers with a sporty zip-up, then expertly topped it off with a knee-length checked jacket. A masterclass in playing with textures and patterns, it's a timely reminder that looking like a gentleman is very much the move for AW18.
Looking effortlessly cool while leaning against a wall in Balenciaga Triple S sneakers is always in season, but unfortunately, sleeveless shirts ain't. So, while temperatures still remain uncertain and the weather has replaced Tinder as your most-used app, take full advantage of the situation. This chap wasted no time, donning a multi-pattern check shirt and keeping the rest of the look low-key. Slouchy pants and a casually swung bum bag complete the vision here.
Once in a blue moon, you come across a 'fit that makes you pause and really consider – this is what people mean when they say 'goals'. For a brisker day, look no further than this guy. A perfectly placed beanie in a bold shade? Yes, sir. Layering at its absolute finest (including an enviable chevron-stripe jumper)? Uh-huh. But the pièce de résistance in the midst of all the greatness is his neon-yellow checked coat. See? We told you this heritage print would be anything but boring.
Becoming a veteran layer player isn't something that just happens overnight – it requires skill, time and great effort. Luckily, when it pays off, it really pays off. Case in point: this gent, who took a seemingly basic ensemble of cuffed denim, a black jumper and PUMA trainers to the next level courtesy of a check trench. In a runway-approved oversized silhouette, he finishes off the look with a colourful scarf that also speaks to the rainbow trend that's dominated the catwalks as of late. Nicely done.
And now, for a 'fit you'd be wise not to pass up. Also firmly in line with the baggier approach many designers have adopted, this bloke nails casual-cool courtesy of some loose-fit checked trousers, an oversized hoodie and a bright-red puffer jacket. As the temps continue to drop, bundling up is the only option – so why not make your look as fly as this?
