STYLISH GUYS IN TRANSITIONAL JACKETS
By Kasia Hastings, 29 September 2018
Yep, summer is done and dusted, which means it’s time to reacquaint yourself with some extra insulation. But before we talk thick winter outerwear, it's time to make the most of early autumn’s trans-seasonal weather with something a little lighter – and a new jacket is the sartorial equivalent of a fresh coat of paint. From strong shapes in interesting colours to timeless classics with a nice twist, take your lead from the guys already making the most of these more moderate climes.
A clean-cut Scandi-style jacket like this is aesthetically pleasing no matter what colour you go for – but choose a statement hue like this guy and your jacket is anything but average. This smart cornflower blue cut is a nice seasonal update that’s doing some good warming work without compromising on style. He knows he’s on to a winner palette-wise, too, so it’s an all blue affair elsewhere with a lighter striped shirt up top and a pair of navy pleated trousers and steezy colour-black trainers on the bottom. Nice.
Return of the mac
Season after season, the mac cements itself as a classic piece of outerwear that is as versatile as it is timeless. Whether you go for a traditional double-breasted belted take, or a simplified iteration like this guy’s vintage Burberry overcoat, the beauty of this cult item is that you basically can’t go wrong. That said, you’d do well to follow this man’s lead. He’s taken his in a cooler normcore direction, adding just a simple tee, straight-cut blue jeans and a black Nike water bottle cross-body for some all-important steez.
By now, most people should be familiar with the stealthy shirt-jacket hybrid that is the shacket, but just in case it hasn’t infiltrated your wardrobe, we’ll explain why it reigns as the stylish man’s go-to autumn layer. Not quite a denim jacket, but distinctly thicker than a button through or your standard overshirt, the shacket is the perfect in-between layer to help you strike the balance when you want to wear a thick piece but not feel like the Michelin Man. Our chap here has done exactly that, wearing his undone over a black logo hoodie to keep his style 100 and his temperature on-point.
Emergency orange, hi-vis strips and other techy safety detailing are big for AW18 and a waterproof is the easiest way to tap the trend. This street-styler goes for a black raincoat with reflective tape accents and a longer cut for a fresh riff on the streetwear favourite. He knows that a next-level windbreaker like this works best with a strong accompaniment of all black garments – notice how he keeps it low-key underneath with a black tee, combats and Nike Air Presto x ACRONYM sneakers.
While there’s clearly something to be said for unexpected colour this autumn, seasonal shades of beige and brown in softer textures are always a strong style move this time of year. Enter, the chocolate-hued suede jacket. It may be synonymous with 70s style, but wearing one doesn’t mean you have to turn back time for your entire look. Make like this guy and go for a boxy jacket with a white contrast stitch to keep things contemporary. Team with a pair of light-washed jeans, trainers and a knitted jumper for some extra warmth and you’re good to go.
