From 90s Californian skater steez to the football-inspired terrace style that emerged during the 80s, channelling sporting subcultures is still the way to go for SS18. So, to get involved in the hype for old-school sports gear, check out these street-stylers who’ve added key bits of sporting kit to their getups.

Who said you can only don a string vest for carnival? The ultimate top-half choice for hot weather, this guy keeps cool (in more ways than one, mind you) with a multicoloured option. To counterbalance the colourfulness he’s got going on up top, he pops on a pair of classic navy adidas shorts. To add even more flavour to his ‘fit, he throws a patterned Louis Vuitton cross-body bag into the mix. To emulate his look, finish off with a pair of clean white creps to slightly tone down your ensemble. Can of Red Stripe, optional.

Sometimes you find a piece of sportswear that’s so good that you can’t help but make it the focal point of your outfit. We suspect that that’s what this guy's experienced, seen here rocking a pair of purple track pants that every member of RUN DMC probably owned back in the day. As his trews have a slight sheen to them, he’s decided to stick to simplicity when it comes to the rest of his getup. A staple white T-shirt with a small graphic print and monochrome shoes ensure that those trousers of his attract the most attention.

You’ve got to love Will from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, because his character brought the gags and good garms in equal measure. Delivering his humorous one-liners in a backwards cap and a day-glo-hued track jacket, he was emblematic of the in-your-face hip-hop-inspired aesthetic that was ubiquitous during the 90s. Bring the look back to life like this street-styler and wear your fluorescent jacket with a complementary tee and staple black jeans. Trade in the duffle bag for a backpack and you’re good to go.

We’ve licked our wounds over the fact that it didn’t come home in the end, but don’t let our valiant defeat put you off sporting a footie shirt. A hallmark of the Italian-born Paninaro aesthetic and our very own terrace style, pairing a football shirt with your regular threads is a solid idea. Make like this street-styler and team yours with slim-fit jeans – wear a roll-neck top underneath when autumn hits for a little extra warmth. To round off his look, he goes for the most sought-after accessories of the season – a slick cross-body bag and vintage shades are all you need.

When it comes to compiling a standout ‘fit, the most challenging part is deciding on your colour palette – but this guy’s mastered it with his black, white and red ensemble. Somehow, he’s managed to cram several retro sportswear pieces into this one seemingly minimal getup. He wears a baseball jersey-style top over his long-sleeved Supreme tee for a nice bit of summer layering, and he goes for black jeans and iconic Nike dunks on his bottom half. A black cap and an embellished cross-body bag make for the ideal finishing touches to an outfit executed with finesse.
