HOW WE DO: CASUAL SUMMER PIECES
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 7 July 2018
Our artworker Nawal has side-stepped the sandals-and-socks trend in favour of wearing your dad’s favourite footwear as it was intended – with his toes wild and free. He’s gone for a fresh, fatherly approach with the rest of his look too, choosing a striped short-sleeved shirt (the kind your old man probably wears at the weekend).
On his bottom half, Nawal opts for a pair of lightweight grey trews and to finish it off he adds of-the-moment touches via a pair of clear-framed shades and a black cross-body bag – the type that all the kids are rocking these days.
You can’t help but look at this photo of our junior sneakers editor Nic then get Will Smith’s epic Summertime playing in your head. When it comes to his ensemble, he’s ticked all the breezy boxes: he starts off his look with a graphic-print T-shirt – a staple wardrobe item presently championed by street-stylers everywhere.
Down low, he dons a set of loose-fitting printed shorts to show he’s ready for a day in the sun and pops on a pair of 60s-flavoured tortoiseshell shades for some old-school steez. Notice how he’s got worn-in Reebok Club Cs on his feet – set for a quick kickabout in the park, eh, Nic?
Streetwear-meets-skatewear has been a popular aesthetic for a while now, but our junior sub editor Ashley has stepped it up a notch with a skatewear-meets-smartwear mashup instead. He channels old-school 90s skater vibes with his long-sleeved top layered under a short-sleeved number, but rather than opting for a graphic-print tee, the twist comes in the form of his minimal denim shirt.
On his bottom half, he's rolled up the cuffs of his straight-fit black jeans to show off his white sports socks that conveniently match his tee. To finish, a 70s-flavoured pair of cherry-red kicks add just enough colour to show that Tom’s fully prepared for summer.
