STYLE LESSONS FROM ON-SCREEN SURFERS

By Chris Sayer, 4 June 2018

After a lengthy wait, summer is finally here – so why not take a few styling tips from those who live for the season? Cue the most iconic on-screen surfers. From classic 70s looks to modern-day techy garms, here are five style lessons that you can take from the cinematic sands and apply to real life.

Forty years on and, yes – this could be a shot from any rad Californian heritage brand’s 2018 lookbook. The wave-hunting, war-fighting, beer-chugging bros of the greatest fictional surf movie of all time are as laid-back cool now as they were in 1978.

Recreating the look means tapping into a handful of this year's bang-on trends: straight-cut chinos or vintage dad denim, a short-sleeved shirt, a pair of round lenses and an off-centre parting tick all the right boxes.

Point Break

The yardstick that every single bromance must measure itself against, this ‘beach bum meets bad boy’ 90s classic isn’t just a blueprint for the coolest of male friendships (minus the bank robbing bits, maybe), but marks the point at which surfers took a leaf out of their land-loving rocker brothers' book and began to get grungy.

Throw on your finest oversized long-sleeved top or shirt, prime your shoulder-length locks with lashings of salt spray and you’re treading in the footsteps of cinema’s coolest surf rat.

Long before Instagram and its hordes of lifestyle bloggers living their best life through exotic shots in far-flung locations, this was what maxed out your envy levels: a genuinely awe-inspiring globe-trotting surf doc from the master of wave riding movies, Bruce Brown. Of the two pro surfers we meet, follow and end up wishing we were, soul-surfer Wingnut takes the style crown over his slightly jock-tacular (and hyper) travel buddy, Pat O’Connell.

Let a check shirt (ideally in oceanic tones) become your new throw-on-with-everything item, along with an array of plain white cotton tees or vests (go for the faded feel if you want a really authentic look) and worn-out chinos or tailored shorts to boot.

But if you’re looking for a real schooling in 90s surfwear brands (such as Stüssy), a lesson in large logo-print tees, and presentation on where the emerging tiny sunglasses trend might’ve come from, then welcome to big school.

No stranger to walls of water in real life, Gerard Butler’s local legend surfer and mentor Frosty proves here that growing up doesn’t mean the waves have to wind down.

Layering is Frosty’s go-to look, with white tees under denim jackets being an option not only for the wintery Californian beaches, but the British summer pub garden before, during and after sunset, too. Go for his signature techy body warmer, too, if you're really feeling the late-night chill. Nice.
