HOW TO WEAR: 80S RIVIERA
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 13 May 2018
For SS18, channelling retro aesthetics is the way to go. If you’ve seen Call Me by Your Name, Elio’s 80s-lead wardrobe is the sort of look we’re talking – think the sort of garms blokes back in the day would rock on a trip to the Italian Riviera but with a fresh twist. From Hawaiian-print shirts to sandals teamed with socks, here’s how to nail the trend this season.

Throughout the 70s and early 80s, from furniture to threads, brown was the colour of choice (just pop on American Hustle to see what we’re talking about). So, to nail the Riviera-inspired look, it’s a solid idea to have a selection of pieces in various brown shades at your disposal.

Start off with a maroon tee in a subtle stripe pattern. While on your bottom half, opt for brown shorts with a standout stripe print to complement your top half but inject some added flavour. Finish your ’fit with a sturdy mid-brown jacket, tinted shades and on-trend socks worn with sandals.

During the decade, psychedelic prints were ubiquitous, so it’s only right to get on board with bold patterning this season. If you’re down to be a bit experimental with your spring/summer wardrobe, try donning several printed garms at once.

When you think of a Hawaiian shirt – a go-to garm during the era – ostentatious floral prints come to mind, but why not switch it up for SS18 and go for a short-sleeved number with a standout hula print instead?

Pare back the impact of your shirt and opt for a pair of refined cropped trousers in a subtle navy hue. Then, introduce a bit of colour with your kicks to reflect the patterning on your top half – a pair of pastel-pink Converse One Star Ox trainers is the way to go.
