INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW WE DO: SPRING STYLE

By Lakeisha Goedluck, 12 April 2018

OK, so the weather’s still hit-and-miss, but spring has legitimately sprung. As the sun’s set to be out next week, the guys at ASOS HQ have decided to dress accordingly – from slick sportswear separates to floral-print shirts. So, here’s what they’ve decided to don to welcome in the new (hopefully warmer) season.

Lately, the 70s has received a lot of love. From slick corduroy cuts to casual striped shirts, the decade has a lot to offer when it comes to diverse style tropes. A big look at the moment is retro sportswear – think colour-block track jackets and tapered joggers.

To get in on the trend in time for spring, copy the likes of our Project Coordinator Daniel. Opt for 70s-flavoured adidas separates to form the basis of your outfit. Go for contrasting colours with your garms, but make sure to match your top half to your creps for laid-back steez.

Another decade that continues to serve as a solid source of inspiration is the 90s. Whether you’re into the hip-hop-lead aesthetic from the era or prefer the preppy approach, there are several style tips from the period to take on board.

Wearing double denim is one of the more controversial trends to emerge from the age, but, to pull off the look, it’s all about styling your pieces with finesse. Pick sturdy denim cuts in different shades, as our Fashion Editor Will exhibits here. Keep the rest of your outfit minimal – a simple white tee, black belt and corresponding trainers should do the trick.

When spring rocks around, the floral-print garms duly resurface. Ranging from subdued paisley picks to standout Hawaiian-style pieces, there are botanical-themed threads to suit every sartorial taste.

To make the patterning on your flower-adorned item more prominent, stick to all black when it comes to the rest of your ’fit. Choosing a short-sleeved floral shirt as the focal point of his ensemble, our Junior Fashion Editor Ben wears a black tee, black adidas joggers and classic slip-on Vans trainers in the same hue to make sure that his shirt stands out.

For AW17/18, borrowing bits from your dad/grandad was the sartorial zeitgeist. As a result, heritage check-print clothing was in high demand – street stylers everywhere were spotted donning sweeping trench coats and smart slacks in varying traditional check patterns.

Carry the trend on well into spring by pairing your vintage-feel piece with skater staples. Start off with an oversized hoodie and pop your checked layer over the top, as our Fashion Editor Luke does here. Down low, wear a pair of light-washed slim-fit jeans and give your getup a refined twist with a pair of black loafers.

In case you weren’t aware, the skater aesthetic is the one to channel this season. Artworker Nawal has nailed the key elements of the look and even incorporated a trend from the AW18 catwalks into his ensemble.

To emulate the style, it’s all about how you layer items together. Start off with a half-zip top worn with a short-sleeved shirt in a contrasting colour. Then, give an outright nod to next season and pick a gilet in an emergency-orange hue to cement your top half. Down low, go for loose-fitting trews and staple Vans Sk8-Hi trainers.
