HOW TO WEAR: SPRING SHADES
By Matt Glazebrook, 25 March 2018
Now’s around the time that we wake from chromatic hibernation and – freed from generally subdued vibes of winter and the need to make everything go with our big coat – emerge, cautious and blinking, into the big, bright world of colour. With that in mind, here are three fresh ways to subtly show off your sartorial spectrum this spring.

Mellow yellow
This golden hour getup is a solid spring option if your cold weather jam is shades of greys or greens. Keeping the tonal layers vibe that’s been a streetwear go-to ever since our lord Kanye West first threw a khaki bomber jacket over an olive-drab sweatshirt, it’s a combo of comfy-cool staples that instead evokes the evening sun on warm sandy beaches.

Throw a mustard shacket over a dusty-yellow Stüssy hoodie (because, while the days may be brighter, it’s gonna be layers weather for a few weeks yet) and add some canary-yellow adidas joggers for a let's-pretend-it's-summer lift down below. Finish with fiery red kicks and heritage check cap.

Ice cream hues
Liberated from desk duty, the traditional striped office shirt has become an unlikely street-style and catwalk star for SS18. The likes of Balenciaga and Martine Rose have elevated the SFW staple with boxy silhouettes and deconstructed styles, encouraging the stylish set to reclaim the humble button-up as a key component of on-trend dadcore or preppy getups. Our version brings some 80s ice cream flavour with mix-and-match stripes in pale yellow, pink and blue.

Stone jeans with a side-stripe in yellow continue the icy fresh theme, as do light grey Nike Air Vortex on foot, while a long-sleeved white tee layered underneath is an optional extra to turn this seaside-suitable summer steez into something more transitional.

Spring blues
If you aren’t ready to step too far away from your winter monochrome uniform, blues and browns are a useful way to introduce a bit of warmth to your wardrobe without going full South Pacific palette. Tap into the casual 70s colour scheme with a knitted shirt in navy, blue and brown stripes and add a burgundy baseball cap to dial up the mercury slightly while keeping the tones nicely muted.

Down below, indigo skater jeans are an SS18 essential and tie in the tones up top. Finally, dip your toe in more traditional spring shades with a pair of pastel-pink Converse All-Stars – they’ll nicely offset the low-key colours up top while staying firmly on the timeless, retro tip.
