STREET STYLERS IN CHUNKY CREPS
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 23 March 2018
Between the resurgence of Nike’s most popular trainer models from the 90s, and your dad’s (and grandad’s) garms becoming a solid source of sartorial inspiration, chunky sneakers are where it’s at this season. So, to get you up to speed with the silhouette, here’s a roundup of well-dressed street stylers exhibiting a whole lot of sole.
Throughout the AW18 fashion weeks, the Balenciaga Triple S style could be spotted on the feet of showgoers everywhere – take this guy, for example, seen at the menswear shows in London. If you look closely, you’ll notice that his whole outfit is centred around the colourway of his trainers. From his blue heritage-check padded jacket to his white cropped trews and red Louis Vuitton x Supreme flight bag, this is a lesson in colour matching done right.
Thanks to the 70s enjoying a comeback for AW17/18, corduroy was the go-to fabric of choice. Fast forward to SS18, and it’s all about another major material from the decade: velour. This street styler's jumped on the hype early and is rocking a retro-style adidas tracksuit made from the stuff. Teamed with her standout creps, she’s fully taken it old school by donning a pair of OG Sketchers. To complete her look, she layers up with a steezy black and pink jacket – extra points for the corresponding cross-body bag.
Now, when it comes to rocking big, bulky trainers, the obvious move is to wear them with a streetwear-lead ensemble. This guy, however, has torn up the rule book and instead opted for a more refined look to prove the versatility of this shoe. Starting off with a smart pinstriped shirt, he layers up with a grandad-style cardigan and a pair of high-waisted trousers. To finish, he sports a structural overcoat in the same hue as his Off-White x Nike Air VaporMax kicks.
When it comes to turbo trainers, the common perception is that the uglier/brighter the shoe, the better. This fella’s gone off-piste, though, and selected a pair of minimal kicks instead. Opting for a simple black and white colourway, he makes the wise decision to keep the rest of his look understated. He goes for a mink-coloured jumper, burgundy side-stripe trackies and a casual leather jacket with a contrasting fur collar. Check out his functional accessories, too – laid-back style, sorted.
