5 AW18 PIECES TO UPDATE FOR SPRING 2019

By Steven Potter, 31 March 2019

It's official: spring is now 100% here. And with this glorious news comes the chance for a little wardrobe refresh as well. To help you ease into warmer climes, we’ve picked five wintry items you can easily update for the new season ahead.

A staple in the 90s and maybe even more so now, the puffer jacket is the ultimate winter jacket. Adopted by the street-style elite for its versatility, the winter brought with it a transition to longer-length styles covered in checks, logos and colour blocking. And from the looks of the 'fit above, clashing your checks is very much encouraged.

For the season ahead, swap it out for a gilet over a hoodie or a jumper like the chap’s above. A hero piece of the utility trend, it’s a quick win for anyone wanting to tap into the military look. In terms of styling, canvas options like the one above work well with cargo trousers. Or, cop a padded piece for a little extra warmth and team with your favourite jeans.

For beating back those chilly temperatures the wool overcoat is the outerwear GOAT. With grandadcore actually becoming a thing, throwback checked and houndstooth styles reigned supreme for street stylers everywhere and for good reason. You can wear it with virtually anything; a hoodie offers a street-ready vibe whereas an overshirt and chinos can smarten the look up instantly.

If you’re a fan of smarter coat styles that rank highly on the wearability chart, a lightweight trench coat is your spring go-to. The beige hue not only gives your outfit a classic twist, but the colour also represents one of SS19’s biggest trends. This lad’s look taps into it perfectly. Tonal chinos, fresh white shirt and khaki Nike kicks. It's a tonal masterclass.

Two of the biggest standout styles for last season’s chill-beating looks were fleece and borg. The throwback fabrics made friends with bombers, overshirts and 90s-style track jackets. Easily worn with denim and chinos alike, the bobbly favourite solidified its status as a certified winter staple.

As the sun’s rays finally start to boost your vitamin D levels, you can bid farewell to fleece and don a classic denim jacket instead. A cornerstone of any spring/summer wardrobe (as an extra layer for beer gardens), the denim jacket is arguably the most wearable standalone of them all. This season, double denim is back, so pick up some jeans in a matching hue and banish any preconceptions you may have about going full D-core.

The bum bag. As far as fashion faux-pas go, it’s really up there. That was until someone decided to ditch the tourist vibe of wearing it around the waist and went for a cross-body technique instead. Never has an accessory had such a radical transformation, and street stylers everywhere adopted them with over-branded aplomb. Just peep this guy's monochrome 'fit for proof.

Although the bum bag is still very much in the sartorial spotlight, its popularity has given rise to a new crop of wearable luggage. Enter the harness bag. With a more rugged appeal, the accessory of choice for Fashion Week regulars has swerved towards this super-techy look. Not content with with the updated version, the guy above has opted for a bum bag/harness combo for double the trend points. Big move.

Knitwear is obviously a good shout for a winter look, but one style ruled the menswear fashionscape with an extra-cosy addition: the roll neck. Worked into smart and casual streetwear looks alike, it was the go-to knit of choice for braving the January menswear shows. The guy above has opted for a smarter vibe, completing his look with smart trousers, a mac and chunky trainers.

Spring is all about layering and there’s one hybrid piece that slots nicely into any look: an overshirt. It's an easy way to represent the utility trend, and with pocket-laden options in all the most popular colours of the season, it’s even easier to try out tonal (just like the man above). And, if you’re really missing the roll neck, you can always add a neckerchief for that extra something.
