STYLE LESSONS FROM NETFLIX SHOWS

By Style Feed Staff, 2 February 2018

Aside from providing endless hours of high-quality TV entertainment and still being the best accompaniment to a chill, Netflix is also a reliable source of sartorial inspiration. From the Stranger Things gang dressed in 80s dadcore garms, to the sportswear-clad Brooklynites in She's Gotta Have It, here’s a roundup of the shows you'd better get binge-watching if you want to up your style game this season.

The show: Everything Sucks!

From Stranger Things to 13 Reasons Why, Netflix routinely delivers when it comes to creating game-changing TV shows centred around groups of teenagers. Everything Sucks! is the latest adolescent-focused offering from the company, and it’s due to be released on 16 February.

The lesson: …except 90s layering

Set in the mid-90s in Boring, Oregon, (yep, that’s a real place), the comedy series follows a misfit gang of kids as they deal with the trials and tribulations of high school. Style-wise, you’re in for a treat: expect retro button-down shirts, skater jeans and outlandish graphic-print tees.

The show: She's Gotta Have It

In Spike Lee’s new Netflix spin-off of his 1986 debut film, polyamorous painter Nola Darling shares her 'loving bed' with three competing suitors – stuffily attired businessman Jamie, silk-robe-swaddled smoothie Greer and funky-fresh streetwear head Mars (a man with a seemingly never-ending supply of boxfresh Jordans). We know which one we’d rather share a wardrobe with.

The lesson: we've gotta have boxfresh sportswear

Mars – played by Lee himself in the original movie, and subsequently Michael Jordan’s co-star in a series of legendary Nike ads – updates his ’80s iteration’s athletic vest and short-shorts aesthetic with biker jeans, Knicks jerseys and boxy sweatshirts. The signature thick-framed glasses, Brooklyn cap and MARS-nameplate necklace remain, as do the essential Nike kicks. Keep the creps clean and the slogan sportswear popping, and you can’t go far wrong riffing on this look.

The show: The End Of The F***ing World

First course of action if suddenly your nationwide status is 'wanted teenage runaway'? Bin your current look, adopt a disguise and go under the radar, obviously. Netflix’s dark new comedy series follows James and Alyssa as two school misfits who go on a crime-filled cross-country road trip. Like a modern-day teen Bonnie and Clyde, the pair need to go incognito, but limited to charity shop swag, make do with oversized vintage vibes and oddly cheerful 90s prints.

The lesson: the return of the f****l shirt

A crumpled floral Hawaiian button-up goes over lightwash dad-fit Levi's, and white tube socks and sturdy black lace-ups complete the mismatched car-boot sale aesthetic. For a little less retro, pair your floral shirt with khaki chinos rolled up at the ankle and white Converse hi-tops. A printed neckerchief and gold-rimmed aviators add some Miami-style textured detailing.

The show: Stranger Things

Bless Mike. He’s not the coolest of the Hawkins Middle School crew (obvs that’s Eleven) but boy, does he know how to rock a cord collar. Your dad’s probably got a grey Harrington jacket like this stashed somewhere and you should definitely hunt it out.

The lesson: don't cut the cord

Updated with a white skater tee, tonal trousers and suede trainers – like this guy – a subtle bit of cord detailing will bring pleasingly minimal throwback feels to your weekend getup.

The show: Narcos

When he's not getting himself into morally murky situations in his obsessive pursuit of Pablo Escobar, there's nothing rogue DEA agent Steve Murphy likes more than slipping into a striped polo shirt in muted 70s hues. And this casualwear classic has re-emerged this year as part of a general revival of interest in the more subtle side of 70s dressing.

The lesson: join the polo club

Cop a slim-fit, colour-block polo in forest green, mustardy-orange or reddy-brown for a dose of retro off-duty steez, or go for a knitted number for a more textured, cold-weather-ready take. Go full DEA-dadcore and pair with straight-leg 501 jeans in a mid-wash blue, or sharpen up with tonal chinos.
