HOW TO WEAR DENIM FOR SS18

When it comes to on-trend fabrics, there's always velour and corduroy – plucked straight from the 70s to refresh your favourite style staples in 2018, from wide-leg trews to retro Harrington jackets. But for a classic material that's gonna be big this spring and for countless springs after, there's only one serious contender: a nice big stack of new-season denim. Whether you’re willing to double up on the textile or prefer your denim to come in neutral hues, here’s how to style your jean-based bits for the coming months.
If there’s anyone who’s making waves within menswear at the moment, it’s Vetements founder and current creative director at Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia. Repurposed slogans (DHL T-shirt, anyone?) and oversized outerwear are just some of the out-there fashion movements that Gvasalia has helped to set in motion – and the latest is wearing two-tone double denim.
Seen on the catwalk at the Balenciaga SS18 show, wearing jeans and a matching jacket is no longer a fashion faux pas destined to only be seen via 90s sitcom reruns. But to pull off ample amounts of denim, it’s essential to keep the rest of your ’fit pared-back – so style the look with a plain T-shirt and staple Converse trainers.
In case you missed it, Call Me By Your Name has generated a lot of hype since its release – both in the film and fashion world. Set in Lombardy, Italy, in the early 80s, the wardrobe choices have got the sartorially savvy talking.
To copy that preppy, sunshine-ready vibe, opt for a short-sleeved lightweight knit to pair with your jeans. Go for denim in a subdued shade to signal that you’re geared up for spring – extra points if your top half features the same colour as your bottom half. Round off your laid-back look with some retro gum-soled kicks.
When it comes to dressing for spring, a highlight is having the ability to bring out those lighter-coloured cuts. Jeans in softer shades – think pastels and off-whites – cropped up on the catwalk at both Martine Rose and Versace for SS18.

Team yours with a jacket in a similar hue – go for one with exposed stitching and a contrasting corduroy collar to add some flavour to your ’fit. Finish the look with a pair of smart shoes and opt for a checked cap to give a subtle nod to last season.
