STYLISH GUYS IN GRANDADCORE
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 10 February 2018
From fleecy half-zips to retro Harrington jackets, the menswear sphere has been preoccupied with donning dad-friendly cuts of late. For AW17/18, however, it’s all about sourcing menswear inspiration from the real head of the family – enter, grandadcore. If you want to look popping this season, make like these street stylers and take some cues from your pops.
Now, is your grandad really your grandad if he doesn’t own a Sherlock Holmes-style trench coat? This guy managed to stylishly incorporate the iconic piece of gentlemanly kit into his outfit by keeping his look tonal. To start, he goes for a staple black roll-neck which he wears with a classic pinstripe suit – another grandadcore staple. Notice the chain detail on his trousers which gives his getup a fresh, relaxed edge.
At any given formal gathering, you’ll most likely see a few of the older men present sporting a checked blazer – just like the one this fella’s wearing here. To shake off the ‘70th birthday party’ vibes this garment often carries with it, he pairs his with this season’s most on-trend cuts. Starting off with a white T-shirt worn underneath his blazer, he layers up with a puffer jacket in the same shade as his fisherman beanie. Down low, spot the wide-leg neutral-coloured trews – an updated take on grandad-flavoured straight-leg chinos.
By the looks of this guy’s ’fit, he’s decided to throw a little grandmacore into the mix, too. Up top, he keeps it granny-chic with his hood up (reminiscent of those translucent hats nans love to rock when it’s raining), oversized glasses and an asymmetric coat in a soft pastel pink. But his bottom half is where the grandad picks come into play. He pairs traditional checked trews with bubblegum-blue kicks – the chunky, super-comfy kind that grandads have been sporting for decades.
Alongside the trench coat, the flat cap is one of those universally recognised bits of grandad gear. To make it look more cutting edge than cosy, take some style tips from this dude. Go for a typical grey-knit flat cap so that you can experiment with bright colours when it comes to the rest of your ensemble. This guy opts for a cherry-red half-zip jumper which he pairs with a fresh-green overcoat; he skilfully tones down his top half with a pair of black trews and minimal retro kicks.
If there’s one sage piece of advice that your grandparents repeat every winter, it’s ‘remember to wrap up warm’. Copy your kin and take layering to the next level by draping a shawl over your shoulder à la this bloke. Top points for matching the colour of his accessory to the check print on his coat. When it comes to your bottom half, keep it chilled with a pair of dark-wash slim-fit jeans and ultra-shiny lace-ups – your grandad’ll be proud, trust.
