INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW WE DO: AW17 COATS AND JACKETS

It’s the proper depths of winter now – time for even the hardiest of us to admit that chattering teeth and a windcheater aren’t going to cut it for our cold-weather kit. Step forward, ASOS HQ’s cosiest: here to show you how they navigate the nasty weather stylishly in a selection of AW17’s key coats and jackets.

Super furry outerwear

AW17/18 is the season fleece crept out from the linings and collars of jackets and started to colonise our entire outerwear collections. A perfect storm of 90s-nostalgic half-zips and 70s-revival shearling fuelled this borg takeover – culture writer Sam here pays tribute to both eras, with a nod to next spring’s Westernwear trend, via his all-over-fuzz trucker jacket in cream.

With a toasty top-layer ticking all the trend boxes, Sam keeps the rest of the look low-key – slim navy Dickies chinos, a retro stripe tee in a muted shade and some off-white Reebok Workouts that tie in with the colour of his jacket nicely.

Peak cosiness

Built for the ski slope and the mountain trail, a puffer jacket is about as cosy as you can get this winter without wearing an actual sleeping bag. Looped editor Nic ups the tog levels even further here, opting for a half-zip version in retro block colours, which makes up for in extra insulation what it loses in ‘ease of getting over your head’.

Edging his alpine coat into streetwear territory, Nic balances his puffer with crisp, straight-leg selvedge jeans and chunky black Reeboks.

Harrington kit

The mid-weight Harrington jacket might not have the frost-battling qualities of some of its outerwear brethren, but it’s a strong option on milder days, and can be layered up – like artworker Nawal’s done here with his chunky hoodie – to suitably snug effect.

Monochrome is always a safe bet for a seasonally-suitable colour palette, and Nawal’s black cargo trousers and all-black sneaks will help him navigate the slushy streets in style. A subtle grey heritage check pattern up top continues the theme, but brings a welcome touch of freshness to the getup.

Mac and steez

The camel trench is an absolute layering classic – ideal for those days when you want to beat the chill and rain but still let your sweatshirt shine. Project manager Daniel has a sweet pastel-pink adidas hoodie that’s doing plenty of heavy-lifting on the cold-beating front, so he’s wisely opted for a loose-fit mac to balance out his ‘fit expertly.

Cuffed black joggers, athletic socks and all-white Nikes are the comfy-casual companions here – making for a look that’s got steezy Sunday brunch on a brisk day written all over it.

Winter blues

Overcoats and hoodies have been the go-to smart-casj combo for mooching moodily around windswept streets for a couple of winters now. Senior editor Matt brings a bit of festive cheer to the downbeat double-up, pairing his black Carhartt sweatshirt with a brilliant blue double-breasted cover-up that taps into AW17’s penchant for ankle-grazing lengths

Big, boxy coats form part of the normcore arsenal championed by Balenciaga, Martine Rose et al this season. Matt references the vibe for all things basic and 90s with chunky dad trainers and stonewash jeans.
