5 COLOURFUL COATS
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 17 November 2017
This autumn/winter, it’s all about switching up traditional sartorial tropes. The time has come to swap out your transitional jacket for a sturdier affair, but don’t think that a classic overcoat in a deep, seasonal hue is your only option. For AW17, carry on playing with peculiar colour palettes and go for a vibrant outer layer to brighten up your wardrobe during these dark days. Here are four standout choices to get you started.
When it comes to ever-popular coat styles, the parka is way up there. A British menswear favourite, the silhouette has been worn by numerous groups over the decades – from soldiers to young mods to pop-culture icons (Liam Gallagher, anyone?). Kick the standard khaki-green version to the curb and opt for one in a bold hue instead. This rust-coloured number comes with a padded lining for extra warmth and functional pockets for peak utilitarian vibes. Layer it over a plain long-sleeved T-shirt, dark-wash jeans and Vans Old Skool kicks.
As arguably the most coveted outerwear silhouette of the last couple of years, the 90s staple is just what you need to keep warm and add a streetwear edge to your getup this season. Channel old-school hip-hop icons and opt for an out-there puffer featuring fluorescent shades and bold typography. Don a black polo-neck top underneath to make sure that the focus remains on your jacket and pair with mid-wash cuffed jeans for an extra nod to the 90s. Finish with some navy Converse trainers to echo your puffer.
As we've already mentioned, the puffer jacket is the style to own for AW17. Nail two trends with one jacket this season and go for one that encapsulates the vibe of the 70s. Corduroy was everywhere back then and tan was the colour of the era, so get yourself a puffer that involves both. Wear a long-sleeved, graphic-print tee underneath and choose navy wide-leg corduroy trews on your bottom half to tie your look together. Round off your ’fit with a baby-pink beanie and some all-white Reebok Club C 85s.
There may be a tendency to stray away from traditional threads this season, but that doesn’t mean that you have to abandon the classics completely. A checked overcoat is a solid go-to if you’re aiming for a more refined aesthetic, but go for an update on the gentlemanly staple and pick one with an unusual pattern. Stay sensibly snug and wear a fine-knit jumper underneath your borg coat. On your bottom half, choose black tapered chinos to offset the combination of colours that feature up top. Sling a bumbag over your shoulder for a casual touch and rock some suede adidas Gazelles on foot.
For those of you that don’t already know, the 80s was the age of androgyny. Loose-fitting jeans, baggy sweatshirts and oversized blazers reigned supreme throughout the era, and it seems that a few choice pieces are back. Jump on the hype for retro rags and pick a too-large blazer like this one. Team with a black round-neck top, matching slacks and chunky Dr. Martens brogues to keep it smart, or pick white Nike Cortez to go on foot for a more laid-back look.
