INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

3 BIG TRENDS FOR AW17

At this time of year – when we’re not packing away our barbecues and looking wistfully at our hibernation-bound Hawaiian shirts – we like to check back in on our AW17 trend predictions to see which key pieces and styling moves have made the jump from catwalk conception to coppable-right-now autumn essential.

70s dad

Dad styles and the 1970s have been two of fashion’s biggest touchpoints over the past few seasons, so it was hardly a surprise to see the two trends combined on the AW17 catwalks. Fatherly favourites, like corduroy trousers, were given the retro palette treatment in reddy-browns, purples and oranges, and paired with tucked-in patterned jumpers, button-through cardigans and shearling jackets for a look that was only 20 Woodbine away from the real deal.

Dip your sartorial brush in the same pre-punk paint pot as Marni, Coach, Prada and AMI by copping some woollens and corduroy clobber in sunset hues. This cardigan in burgundy with mustard piping ticks all the right retro boxes, while the oversized fit keeps one foot in 2017.

Riot and rave

Designers from Christopher Shannon (above) to Christopher Ræburn have dialled up the brightness to fluorescent, and the BPM to above 150, with slogan-heavy sportswear cuts inspired by the happy hardcore and gabber scenes.

Mix your revamped rave brights with whites and light greys – as on this oversized sweatshirt – for a warehouse-party-ready take on the trend. Or, pair fluoros with more muted tones for a subtle pop of colour.

Protect and serve

With the world going to hell in a handbasket, many AW17 collections retreated into the comforting embrace of a duvet-like puffer jacket. Balenciaga went big on life-jacket-esque outerwear,  Craig Green and Rick Owens added military details to enhance the dystopian vibes, and Facetasm (above) paired padded coats with equally cushioned trousers.

Wrap yourself in the outside-world-appropriate equivalent of a comfort blanket by making a cosy puffer jacket your winter investment piece. It’s rare that fashion and functionality collide so satisfyingly, so zip that bulky beauty up to the chin, secure in the knowledge your excessive levels of comfiness are ticking all the right 90s-streetwear-meets-futuristic-utilitarianism boxes.
