3 CUT-AND-SEW SWEATS
By Sam Higgins, 31 July 2017
Fashion’s love for DIY duds has evolved considerably from simply scribbling on your favourite pair of trainers or jeans. Although street-stylers still favour that form of homemade idiosyncrasy, designers have started offering the customised vibe in a more polished form from the get-go – including piecing together a patchwork of styles and textures to create statement sweatshirts. Here are three of our favourites.

Heavenly half-zip
The half-zip has been at the top of nearly everyone’s 2017 wardrobe wish list. So it’s no surprise that it’s been given this season's cut-and-sew treatment too, bringing an even stronger retro feel to the throwback piece. Here, a base of neat navy and off-white keep things versatile, before it’s cut up with bold yellow sides for a strong statement that doesn’t rely on garish graphics or overpowering hues.

Wear with slim black trews and a pair of terrace style kicks to take the look from the stands to the streets.

Brilliantly bold
This sweatshirt follows suit in terms of design, but offers a more boxier cut than the half-zip’s fitted sizing. Blue and red aren’t always the best of pals when it comes to palettes, but the pale upper of the soft-touch sweat tames the clashing colours slightly, allowing the mismatch to be the main focal point for all the right reasons.

Throw on light-washed jeans and fresh kicks to keep the cosy cover-up on-point and seasonal.

Simply stylish
This DIY-feel design technique doesn’t just rely on bold colour clashing. In fact, the cut-and-sew style is arguably most effective when presented in a simple, subtle form. Take this oversized sweatshirt – the blue and white stripes across the chest add a fresh burst of colour and break up the grey silhouette.

The simple switch-up works best when you keep things tonal with blue jeans and monochrome trainers, allowing the striping to accent the minimal piece superbly.
