WHAT COLOUR SHOULD I DYE MY HAIR?
By Chris Sayer, 29 July 2017
Finally settled on your fresh new summer haircut? Good on you, pal. But you’re only halfway there. With swathes of stylish guys dying their hair and making their follicles pop, it might be about time you considered a fresh new colour to go with that 'do, too. Here’s your shotgun guide to what tones to consider, and who’s rocking them best…
Bleach blonde
Dropping colour into your hair is a risky business, but with the sheer volume of celebs hitting the peroxide of late, a bleached-blonde 'do might just be the safest option of the lot. Kanye, Orlando Bloom, Justin Bieber, Zac Efron, Lionel Messi, Miles Teller, Odell Beckham Jr and Jaden Smith have all done it, and done it brilliantly. But not quite as brilliantly as stalwart of the gender-neutral look, Kristen Stewart. Three things she’s taught us about bleachin’? Keep the roots dark for a dose of surfer grunge, slick it all right back for a heavy hit of sheer cool, and bleach a buzz cut for something totally different, but totally ace.
Pink
If you were told the ocean had turned pink, you’d think something was seriously wrong. But Frank Ocean turning pink? All kinds of right. Stepping out with his grade-one rose locks at the start of June, the look was instantly heralded as an early contender for style moment of the summer. Why does it work? It’s not as conceptual and psychological as you might think. The fresh, pale hue pops spectacularly off more muted, retro tones (think burgundies and browns). Sure, being a damn handsome dude helps a lot, too, but in short, if you’re going pink, let your hair do all the talking. Watch our vid to find out how.
Silver
The ladies have had this one cornered for some time, with everyone from Ellie Goulding to Rihanna adding nifty shades of grey to their follicles. But the trend’s managed to quietly seep through the gender gap, first with pomp master Mark Ronson and, more recently, Lucky Blue Smith and die-hard dye fan Zayn Malik, too. The one thing these old heads on young shoulders have in common? They all rocked the OAP colour with top-notch, swept-up 'dos. And if you’re gonna give the silver fox look a shot, you should do the same – like this smooth street styler.
Red
Leave your half-hearted hesitations at the door, buddy – this one is an all-or-nothing move. Especially if faux redhead Lil Yachty’s hairdo moves are anything to go by. And with such a tiny pool of celebs willing to dip into the rouge, these are moves ripe for the copying. Yachty full-blown owns the look by going all out on top, with braids and beads to boot. If you’re gonna go there, go all guns blazing – check out our video for how to get the look.
