SUMMER STYLE HACKS FOR SKINNY GUYS
By Libby Banks, 27 June 2017
If you’re on the skinny side, you’re probably the envy of your fashion-forward friends. After all, you can pull off straight-off-the-catwalk styles that may look a bit OTT on your more muscly counterparts. But dressing for summer can still be a minefield for skinnier dudes, especially when it comes to getting the balance between comfort and style. Here’s how to embrace your frame when the weather heats up.
Shorter shorts
Let’s be clear: we’re not talking hotpants. But slim-cut shorts that finish just above the knee and are styled with a single turn-up will magically bring your summer basics bang up to date (and have the added bonus of looking nice and proportional on a more slender set of legs). Wear with high-tops and that’s your summer uniform sorted.
Break it up
Wearing one colour from head to toe can extenuate skinniness, so you might as well have some fun when it comes to your warm-weather palette. Tyga is a master when it comes to mixing up layers of eye-frazzling colour and pattern. But note how he pulls it together with a fresh white tee and sneakers. The key is to be bold and play it with confidence. And if you’re not ready to mix tangerine orange with red, you can still use this approach with more muted tones. Side note: pulled-up white tube socks are officially a thing this summer.
Switch up your bomber
On the subject of mixing up colour and prints, changing up your top-half-enhancing winter MA-1 for something a little lighter and brighter is an easy wardrobe switch-up. Harry Styles, a man who has been keeping under the radar in recent months, is back and providing skinny dudes with plenty of fresh inspiration. Here he expertly demos the power of the lightweight summer bomber.
Layered look
Unless you are decamping to Ibiza or Palm Springs for the foreseeable future, assume it’s not going to be blazing sunshine continuously from now until September. With this in mind, layering is essential and, fortunately, styling up pieces this way works particularly well if you have a skinny frame. Play with lengths and don’t feel obliged to be matchy-matchy. The stylish play is work with loose-fitting items with a 90s flavour. And if you fancy adding a bucket hat into the mix, even better.
Yes to vests
There is a myth that skinny guys shouldn’t wear vest tops but, in reality, they can look ace. Just avoid cuts that totally swamp you, or are too skimpily cut (although this advice applies to all men, regardless of their shape). Wear with simple, slim-cut shorts.
The perfect sweatshirt
If you want to bulk up without the protein shakes and gym habit, a structured sweatshirt is a good way to go. Crew-necks work well on slimmer guys – push up the sleeves to style it just right.
