SUMMER STYLE HACKS FOR SHORT GUYS
By Libby Banks, 24 June 2017
It’s easy to assume tall guys have more options when it comes to playing with trends and trying out new styles. But this isn’t true – shorter dudes can have just as much fun with fashion. Whether you’re planning a complete summer-wardrobe overhaul or just a few quick updates, keep in mind some basic guidelines when you’re picking out what to wear and your summer will be sorted.
Be the best guest
If your weekends are quickly filling up with weddings, it’s worth investing in a decent summer suit. Tailoring is the short guy’s secret weapon as a good fit will add inches. If the trousers are a little on the long side, get them adjusted so they just scrape the anklebone and go sockless with loafers. Try a summery pastel hue for an instant feel-good factor.
Co-ords are your friend
Using the same principle as a suit but with a more laid-back feel, matching the top and bottom of your outfit is an easy way to lengthen your silhouette. Stick to one solid colour or up your game with subtly patterned pieces.
The oversized tee
Conventional wisdom might tell you to steer clear of baggy silhouettes, but if you’re stuck in a slim-fit T-shirt rut, you can balance out a loose-cut top half with slim-leg trousers. Perfect for that Stussy skate tee your wardrobe has been crying out for.
Get some tie dye in the mix
For another strong T-shirt option, channel some serious retro-rave style – a la Biebz – and get tie dye in the mix. Nothing says ‘Summer of Love’ quite like it, and it’s a great way to get bring colour into your holiday steez. Whereas bright fluorescents were traditional in the summer of ‘89, pastel versions are much more 2017.
Dress your eyes
Let’s face it, sunglasses are probably the most indispensable item in any man’s summer-style arsenal. Heavy one last night? They’ll hide your bleary eyes. Uninspired outfit? They’ll give it an instant upgrade. The trick, though, is to get the balance between flattering and fashion – mirrored styles are a good compromise.
The straight-leg roll-up
Not a fan of shorts? No problem. Choose a straight-leg chino and roll the cuffs for easy summer styling. If needs be, get a tailor to shorten the length to avoid the rolls looking too bulky. Perfect with some pool sliders – and the cropped effect will add a little visual length to your pins.
Get stoned
We’ve talked about this particular sartorial shade plenty, but this summer stone is set to really come into its own. Easy to wear and flattering on most skin tones, it was a favourite at the latest line-up of menswear shows – from Agi & Sam and Astrid Andersen to Fendi and Versace. If your summer wardrobe is groaning with grey, it might be time to update it with this new neutral hue.
