9 EARLY SUMMER STYLE ICONS

It’s like a style lobotomy. The merest hint that winter is over and the streets are awash with men who have forgotten how to get dressed. Too-tight tees, baggy shorts with formal shoes, ill-advised headgear – the transition from winter to summer dressing is a minefield. Warm weather means doing more with less, which is harder than it sounds. From classic style icons to the new generation of fashion pioneers, we’ve rounded up an eclectic line-up who know what it takes.

Tyler the Creator

Tyler is the kind of guy who dresses like it's summer all year round, which means he owns fashion during the warmer months. Two words sum up his signature look: skatewear and pastels. The mix of a 90s-inspired silhouette and a modern colour palette makes for a brilliantly easy spring-to-summer wardrobe

James Dean

Whenever menswear designers find themselves in need of summer inspiration, they turn to the pantheon: Steve McQueen, James Dean and Paul Newman. These men knew how to make more of less, which is the basic premise of classic style. Here, the Rebel Without A Cause star proves you don’t need bold patterns or loud colours to make a style statement. A well-fitted white T-shirt and jeans will do the job.

The hair, the T-shirt, the disenfranchised 'f**k you' pose. Everything about this photo of the late actor and grunge icon feels right for now. An oversized Stussy T-shirt, mid-length 90s hair and wide-leg chinos or jeans will get you there.

Mick Jagger

No one does summer swagger quite like Jagger did in his heyday. Few could make a vintage Victorian blouse look rock ’n’ roll, but he made it his own. The lesson? As the weather heats up, there’s no harm in pushing the boundaries a bit and taking a risk. For a 2017 update on Jagger’s style ethos, try a patterned shirt undone, with slim-cut jeans and a ton of attitude.

David Beckham

Not ready to embrace the pastel palette just yet? Do as Beckham Sr does and keep it monochrome. The focus of his spring style is clean fits, neutral colours and classic finishes, proving that you don’t need to overthink it. By sticking to the classics, he uses accessories to bring his own personality to the look.

Tinie Tempah

A man with an innate sense of style and zero sartorial inhibitions, Tinie knows that fashion should be fun – and this makes him the perfect spring style muse for maximalists. The secret is getting the fit right, and then playing with colour and pattern. Here he combines a pink silk floral shirt with emerald trousers and pink sneakers. And the result is magnificent.

Justin Bieber

You can try and deny it but over the years the Biebs has undergone a fashion transformation to be reckoned with. And, like Tyler, he's a man who has a tendency to dress like its summer whatever the weather. Here Justin demos perfect sportswear steez for that tricky spring-to-summer transition. The tonal off-white pulls the whole thing together and keeps it nice and fresh.

A$AP Rocky

Rocky’s approach to dressing has a freedom that encapsulates what style means right now. An icon for our time, his wardrobe lives at the cutting edge of the fashion space, and he's not afraid to try out head-to-toe catwalk outfits. But there is more to the man’s style than neon fur coats and puffer jackets big enough to house a small family. His genius is in his ability to re-work standard-issue pieces, like this Breton-striped T-shirt, in a way that looks totally new.

Ryan Gosling

While he's probably best known for the Scorpion bomber he wore in Drive, Gosling is a big advocate of the jacket off-screen, too, and it’s the ideal companion for those tricky in-between months. As the weather warms up, try switching up your black MA-1 for a stone or pastel shade. Add a great pair for sunglasses and a white T-shirt and you’re all set.
