NEW SS17 TREND: SLATE PALM
By Matt Glazebrook, 8 April 2017
April’s here and with it the chance to give your wardrobe a thorough spring clean – packing away your winter garms and tired trend pieces, and working in some fresh, straight-from-the-catwalk gear – like our new Slate Palm trend, for instance.

Tonal greys and washed-out blues and khakis aren’t going anywhere for spring 2017, but Slate Palm sees the cool, calm palette elevated a notch with subtle floral prints and camos.

Dip a toe into summer steez – as opposed to going full luau – with floral prints in muted hues, and mix in soft military-inspired pieces for a utilitarian edge.

Slate Palm mixes Japanese-flavoured patterns and details with a Scandinavian focus on simplicity and faded shades. Cuts are boxy and the general vibe is clean and airy.

Styling-wise, it’s all about easing through the in-between weather season with copious – but considered – layering. Don’t be afraid to mix stripes or prints, and let oversized shapes help you play with proportion.

Key pieces include wide-leg smart trousers, functional shackets and slouchy bombers. Oversized hoodies and sweatshirts will keep the not-quite-summer-yet chills at bay.

Seek out camouflage patterns and floral prints like leaves and palms, but keep the whole vibe understated with tonal takes on the grey/tan/khaki/blue sections of the colour chart.

For catwalk inspiration, look to the likes of Jil Sander, whose typically minimalist SS17 menswear show incorporated faint florals across tonal two-pieces.

Similarly, Dries van Noten’s SS17 collection mixed clean Nordic lines with faded prints inspired by medieval art, while Kolor took the sting out of bold print-clashes with a subdued grey/blue/gold palette.
