NIKE MATCH CLASSIC
By Nic Hayman, 29 January 2017
It’s always impressive to see a brand bring back an archive silhouette that looks as good years later as it did on its debut. But it’s even more impressive when they improve on the design. Striding onto centre court this Sneaker Sunday is Nike’s Match Classic.

The Match Classic is somewhat of a footwear Frankenstein’s monster – instead of just reviving the original silhouette that stalked the courts in the 80s, Nike have pieced together different elements from various standout shoes plucked from their deep vault of tennis designs. Sounds like the stuff of sneakerhead dreams, though our efforts would probably be far more green and monstrous than these clean-cut kicks.
Minimalism is the motive here, as was the clubhouse style back in the day, with the simple cupsole sneaker given a shaggy suede upper in neutral grey. Even that Swoosh is shrunk down for a super-simple aesthetic – good things, small packages and all that. The result? One supremely smart sneaker. Keep things just as simple elsewhere with dark, cropped trousers, an Oxford shirt and a worker jacket and it’s game, set, Match Classic.
