JADEN VS WILLOW
By Sam Higgins, 31 October 2016
When it comes to stylish siblings, none are more sartorially advanced than Willow and Jaden Smith. The picket-line-leading, tradition-smashing duo have become the faces of a generation open to outfit androgyny and aesthetic experimentation. Pitted against each other, however, whose style is better? The Fresh Fresh Prince or the even Fresher Princess?

Throwback threads
Ding ding ding! It’s round one and we’re talking one of 2016’s hottest trends – the vintage tee. In one corner, we have Jaden in a ‘Black Knight’ T-shirt – a rare 90s ode to racing legend Dale Earnhardt – which he kept simple with some skinny black jeans and Vans.

In the other corner there's Willow, her yellow, oversized, Flaming Lips tour tee paired with a checked shirt – tactically tied around her waist – and a pair of rugged black Converse on her feet. Solid effort, sure, but for venturing outside the parameters of the band tee, Jaden takes this round.

Denim cuts
When it comes to layering up, denim has been a staple selection for some time now. But whether it’s key pieces getting the oversized treatment or the rise of customisation, the denim jacket has been given new life in 2016. Naturally, the stylish siblings were out front purveying the latest trend in their own unique ways.

Jaden, wearing his own MSFTSrep label, chose a light-wash denim jacket – using the sleeves as a canvas for illustration – while the rest of his ensemble remained monochrome. Willow though, keeping things all-black like Jaden, layered an XL oversized version on top, hid her hands in the baggy sleeves and pulled an expression like ‘Yeah, yeah I’m cool, get over it’. So, for that, it’s now 1-1.

Sartorial superheroes
To be fair, throwing on four different, print-clashing layers up top and managing to pull off the look with ease is a sartorial superhero move. But there’s nailing improbable combinations and then there’s dressing like you’re an actual member of some elite vigilante fashion force. That’s what Willow did at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, warning off potential style criminals in a futuristic silver Chanel catsuit and black, embellished jacket.

Jaden however – the Batman in this style scenario – was busy at the Louis Vuitton show in a half-checkerboard leather jacket, black zipped trousers and seriously shiny shoes. The Dark Knight rose, but Willow and her Catwoman kit reigned over him. 2-1 to Willow.

Tonsorial twists
If you needed more proof that twists, braids and dreads are the cuts to sport right now, just look to the Smiths. No, not Morrissey – Willow and Jaden. Not only are the duo equally adventurous sartorially, they’re even twinning with the same 'do.

So much so that, even though Willow’s trim is probably a tamer take on the look, choosing one hairstyle over the other is just too hard a task. Let’s call this a draw, ref.

Cool for coats
So this is it, the final round, and we’re talking coats. Whether it’s the winter warmer at the core of your cold-weather kit or the statement outer layer when bossing the basics, your jacket is the final flourish of style in your ‘fit. Hence why Jaden was willing to cover up his excellent tie-dye, printed tee with an even more brilliant bleached denim jacket with borg collar.

But not even strong shearling, adidas kicks and a signature cap could compete with Willow’s efforts. Why? Accompanying her comfy combo of beanie, black hoodie and leggings, she cut through the monochrome tones with a red, longline quilted jacket that looked seriously cool and even more cosy. The winner, taking the crown on her birthday, is Willow with 3.5, vs Jaden's 1.5.
