STYLE LESSONS FROM STRANGER THINGS
By Style Feed Staff, 8 July 2019
Season three of the Netflix smash-hit series Stranger Things is finally here. Expect more inter-dimensional horrors, meddling government agents, sweet soundtracks, and of course, a wealth of retro-inspired style inspiration. To celebrate, take a peek at our favourite looks from across the show’s three seasons.
The colour palette is on point
Who’d have thought brown, brown and more brown would look so good? Whether it’s a shearling jacket, corduroy trousers or ribbed knitwear, all retro garms look immediately retro-er rendered in tan, mustard and a chocolate brown murkier than Murkwood.
The guy above has clearly been taking pointers from Lucas’ tonal tekkers. With burnt-out hues sticking around for the summer, the above coordinated cut-and-sew look is a great way to tap into the show's golden-brown aesthetic.
A striped shirt doesn't lie
Ah Mike, the original Dungeon Master. He’s been through it, you know? Best mate trapped in The Upside Down, an all-consuming crush on a girl with devastating mental powers and, apparently, pioneer of smart-casual staples. Just check that striped shirt out.
The street styler above has taken Mike’s staple aesthetic to the max as he’s chosen a shirt featuring almost every stripe style ever. He’s also topped it off with some groovy trews in the same throwback colour scheme as the iconic first season. Superfan? We'll never know, but great combo anyway.
Colour is key
Mike might have had a tough time, yeah, but not compared to Eleven. If she’s not vaporising the minds of certified bad guys or, you know, diabolical creatures from another dimension, she’s serving up a lesson in bright garms. In a summer ruled by colour, her 80s-AF aesthetic is one to watch.
If denim dungarees were her thing last season, she’s switched them up for a worker-style variant for season three. The guy above’s clearly got the message on the both the colour scheme and key-piece front as he’s even managed to cop some dungarees in a similarly blue hue.
Nike Cortez are always cool
Steve is the raffish school bad boy with the extremely bouffed barnet who wears a ringer tee with pride and Nike Cortez like they were made for him.
The all-time-favourite retro silhouette perfectly encapsulates the mood of both Netflix's big splash and this coming winter season, which has sporty, athletic 80s vibes down.
Denim? Double it
Hawkins’ best bully, Billy Hargrove, is the denim-clad protagonist we were introduced to in the series’ second season. An avid fan of the denim two-piece, he caught eyes all over when his just-a-little-too-tight ensemble first stepped out of his fiery motor and into the hearts of more than a few of Hawkins Middle School’s regulars.
Once only strictly reserved for the most low-key of 80s fancy-dress ideas, an all-denim look is now very much a certified flex. Take the chap above: it doesn’t get much fresher than a white tee and light-wash denim. The two go better together than Billy’s unapologetic mullet and his love for 80s hair metal. Extra points for the patches and that chain necklace too.
