As national holidays go, Independence Day is a pretty big deal in the US. And although The Weeknd was too busy working on his fourth album to join the party properly, he made sure he paid sartorial tribute to his North American neighbours in a true stateside classic – the denim jacket.

Practical, stylish and enduringly cool, the denim jacket has been adopted by just about every fashion tribe since the 50s, and The Weeknd brings his bang up to date with some simple styling. First, he creates a strong colour contrast, layering his light-wash jacket over an all-black ensemble. Underneath, a longline tee, slim jeans and lace-up boots add a street-ready edge. Finally, he finishes things off with some metal detailing to introduce a nice 90s grunge feel.
