Kendrick's guide to tracksuits
By Kasia Hastings, 17 June 2016
At 29, Kendrick Lamar’s achievements include four albums, five mixtapes, seven Grammys, a trainer collab, a collection of particularly stylish videos and some great outfits but, so far, his considerable contribution to the tracksuit game remains unrecognised. To correct this omission – and in honour of his birthday – we bring you Kendrick’s guide to cool comfies.
Kendrick knows that the key to keeping your tracksuit on the right side of loungewear comes down to fabric and fit. Like a true pro, he goes for a flecked grey jersey in a cut that is neither oversized nor too close for comfort. If you're wearing a full leisure look, keep your colours coordinated but try to break things up with texture and interesting details.
Sweats Don't Kill My Vibe
When you and Jay Z are having courtside lols the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable, so Kendrick kits himself out with some suitably stylish loungewear. Sure Jay's rocking a fashion drape but K-dot has the last laugh here – he's teamed his simple grey sweatshirt with a pair of cropped joggers that are cool, comfy and – most importantly – not jeans.
Good kid, m.A.A.d comfies
Printed tracksuit bottoms are hard to pull off but, broken up and paired with a simple tee, they're the perfect way to upgrade your sweats. The rapper knows that going crazy with colour here could cause disaster, so monochrome is the only to way go.
This isn't Kendrick's first time at the rodeo – he knows that NBA superfan James Goldstein's
cowboy getup isn't going to net him any style points. Instead, his grey and blue tracksuit shows exactly how to casually coordinate two colours in one look. Another Reebok classic.
Want to make your tracksuit more upmarket? Simply work in a designer tee. Kendrick's Comme des Garçons polo adds a nice fashion-forward edge to his faded black joggers.
No More Joggers in LA
Here Kendrick shows us that hotter climes don't have to stop you rocking a tracksuit. By going for a grey hoodie and cream shorts, he takes the look out of sportswear territory and makes it into a solid summer outfit. Elsewhere, a green cap, grey socks and trainers add some solid styling detail.
The Bolder The Berry
We imagine Kendrick called up DJ Khaled before the game and said something like, 'Let's wear wild tracksuits later', because Lamar looks pretty pleased with himself. While we commend Khaled's bravery, we can't condone purple velour. Kendrick's sweats, on the other hand, are the right side of wavy. The rapper knows all too well that a darker print keeps a full look like this relatively understand. Tracksuit goals.
