STYLE EVOLUTION: ROBERT PATTINSON

2005 saw Pattinson’s first foray into supernatural cinema as wizarding jock Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. Clearly quite taken with JK Rowling's world of velvet cloaks and house colours, at the film’s London premiere the young actor went for a look that landed somewhere between Hogwarts heartthrob and 00s nightmare. Gryffindor receives no points. 

The release of the first Twilight film in 2008 saw Pattinson scoring big as Edward Cullen, but he hadn’t quite conquered the epic sartorial struggle of nailing a smart/casual outfit. While this bizarre ensemble is a bit 'grunge goes to Hollywood', it does show early signs of the solid colour coordination, cool shoes and penchant for hats that would come to define his style.

In 2010, his budding romance with Kristen Stewart and a full-on filming schedule meant R-Patz was rarely not on a plane and his style was a bit up in the air, too. This look is American meets Brit abroad but represents a good early attempt at layering and has some nice grungy elements. 

In 2015, with the Twilight saga behind him, Pattinson had polished up his look and pursued more interesting acting opportunities. At the Berlin Film Festival to promote the film Life, the actor made his militant-architect aethestic look almost effortless with a grey Harrington jacket, longline knit, loose trousers, lace-up boots and a sullen expression. Top marks for colours, texture and temperament.

Here we see our hero in his sartorial stride, confidently compiling some menswear staples to create something truly special. He’s too cool for traditional colour rules and his blue mac and green chinos are expertly offset with a fresh white tee and black cap, jacket and kicks. 

If there was a man who made us want a bomber jacket in 2015, it was Robert Pattinson. His signature bomber, beanie and shades formula is at its best here and even though it's June and the sun is shining, he’s sticking to his guns because he knows it’s a great outfit.

When you’re one half of a really cool couple, the pressure’s on to keep up your end of the stylish bargain, and our boy does well here with a look that hits just the right side of hipster. He’s mastered cool colour coordination, working some warm rusty tones into his signature formula for a winter ‘fit worthy of an OOTD. 

Pattinson doesn’t do fancy dress, but he does do very good occasionwear, so he ignored the Met Gala’s Manus x Machina technology theme and channelled James Bond with a buzz cut instead. His classic red-carpet look and twigs' ethereal outfit made them the coolest couple of the night.

Which brings us to the R-Patz we've come to know and love, the stylish man who loves a mac and likes to party. Here he is in an after-party outfit we’d wear all-day, everyday. He knows the game of tones and he plays to win with, this time, black, white and navy. 

And finally, fast forward to 2017 and we find our leading man at the Berlin Film Festival premiere of The Lost City Of Z, in a Dior Homme outfit that looks more Edward Cullen than Amazon explorer. Following two seasons as the the face of the French label, Pattinson’s style has become increasingly fashion forward on and off the red carpet with edgy looks like this a regular occurrence.
