STYLE LESSONS FROM GAME OF THRONES

Prepare to say goodbye to your Monday evenings – Game Of Thrones is back for its eighth and final season. As the battle between the dead and the living no doubt gets more brutal, it's not just the Night King and Daenerys' dragons that we'll be keeping an eye on – there are some surprising style lessons to be taken from the windswept wardrobes of Westeros. Faux fur is a neutral

As Jon Snow’s status within Westeros has grown, so has his collection of fur cloaks. Starting with shaggy, thrown-together cover-ups when he joined the Night’s Watch, he’s since amassed a collection of sleeker, fancier capes. While we absolutely don’t condone the use of real fur, the faux kind is a great way to both warm up and spruce up your outfits.

This guy, like Jon, knows that a touch of the soft stuff can add interest and comfort to the simplest of looks. A white tee, some techy trousers and a padlock chain are made cold-weather appropriate with this jacket. Don’t fear the 70s football manager look – faux fur, like animal print, is a new neutral that’s surprisingly versatile.

Soften your metallics

Brienne of Tarth’s sense of knightly honour is so extreme that she even keeps her armour in tip-top condition. She knows, though, that when you’re chasing round the Seven Kingdoms attempting to keep up with various Starks and serve them (even if they don’t want your help), you also need to be comfortable. Her scarf is the perfect foil to all that burnished gold.

This street styler has picked up some tips from Lady Brienne, taking on the metallic trend with some high-impact silver joggers and toning it down with a blazer, bag and huge scarf in various shades of Westeros’ favourite colour – grey. It’s a masterful lesson in picking one (very) statement item and keeping the rest tonal and simple.

Understand the power of brown

Jaime Lannister may look depressed here, but he really shouldn't. Not only is he one of the most dapper dressers in King's Landing, he's also got a jump on the brown trend that's been sweeping through menswear for the last couple of seasons.

No longer black's boring cousin, recently brown has crept out of your grandad's wardrobe and onto the backs of well-dressed men everywhere. Take this guy – his look is a symphony in sludge, a love letter to tan, a composition in coffee. Highlighted with just a flash of navy – or in Jaime's case, a golden hand and a morose expression – it's the new way to do monochrome.

Pin a badge on it

Former stylish playboy, former stylish Hand of the King, current stylish Hand of the Queen. Expertly turned out even in battle, Tyrion Lannister knows the power of an accessory. Here, he wears his Hand badge with pride, despite obviously having doubts about whatever Daenerys is planning to do with those dragons.

Pin badges and sew-on patches are a great way to personalise a look. Take this guy's borg-lined denim jacket and camo coat – so far, so low-key. But add badges and it becomes a masterclass in military-inspired dressing of which the King's Landing's army would be proud.
