KANYE WEST VS EVERYONE
By Sam Higgins, 1 June 2017
There’s no denying Kanye West’s influence on fashion over the last few years. If people aren’t trying to cop his latest line, they’re crafting their own look inspired from his everyday wear. And it’s not just hypebeasts who are recreating Ye’s looks on the regular – stylish A-listers are following suit, too. With that in mind, we’ve pitted him against five fellow celebs to see who did Kanye better.
Kanye vs Justin Bieber
Welcome to the 2017 edition of Battle Of The Band Tees – first on stage is Justin Bieber. One half of the audience is applauding his impressive range of custom band merch, while the other are just shouting: ‘I bet you’ve never even listened to them, mate!’ Either way, he utilised it well, by pairing the retro Slayer tee with some ripped skinny jeans to give an added grungy edge to his tonal look.
Kanye, however, on a break from repping his own line, did manage to add his own touch to an oversized Nirvana tee by giving it the distressed treatment. Although Ye pulls it off well, criticism of Bieber only seems to spur him on to wear better and more eccentric band tees – so, ding ding ding, round one goes to Biebs.
Kanye vs Corey Gamble
Everything gets a bit weird when your dad starts dressing like you and trying to act your age. Luckily for Corey Gamble, his step-son-in-law is Kanye West (who's older than him anyway) so stealing his style tips isn’t too strange. Post-performance at the Grammys last year, Kanye ditched his formalwear for a comfy tracksuit but made sure it was his finest velour two-piece.
Not wanting to step on any toes, Corey left it a good six months before replicating the velour tracksuit while out shopping with none other than Ye himself. But for his audacity to don luxe loungewear at a posh awards bash, Kanye has to take the crown here.
Kanye vs Harry Styles
Everyone and their mate has been wearing souvenir jackets this year, but their sartorial star status was confirmed when Kanye was spotted wearing one to his studio. However, teen heartthrob Harry Styles sported the same Saint Laurent sukajan on stage in 2016, way ahead of the trend and way ahead of Pablo, too.
The One Directioner wore his jacket buttoned up, paired the designer piece with some super-skinny spray-on black jeans, and finished his look off with bold black Chelsea boots. Kanye, however, simply slipped the souvenir into his ‘fit casually by leaving it unbuttoned to show off a plain black tee and distressed skinny jeans. This one goes to Ye – sorry, Harry.
Kanye vs Kim Kardashian
We don’t know for sure but we imagine that with his never-ending range of clothes, the inside of Kanye’s wardrobe is a tardis. Or, possibly, that it leads to a Narnia-like world consisting of only oversized, boxy threads and distressed denim. Either way, it seems he didn’t bury his one-of-a-kind Hi Mum I'm Dead denim jacket too deep in there, as Kim nabbed it and draped it over an all-black airport ‘fit last summer.
She gave the one-off piece the girlfriend (or, in this case, wife) treatment, rolling up the sleeves and letting it hang nonchalantly off her shoulder. Kanye, on the other hand, made it the centre of attention by keeping things simple with an otherwise-smart black get-up and letting the graffitied piece take the limelight. It’s too close to call and, so as not to upset either half of the power couple, we’re going to leave this one as a tie.
Kanye vs Shia LaBeouf
We don’t think either Shia LaBeouf or Kanye West were who Alex Turner had in mind when he wrote the line ‘trackie bottoms tucked in socks’, but both the underdog and overdog of fashion here seem to have taken that suggestion and run with it. Pulling his socks over his joggers has become a key part of Shia’s signature style – that and his collection of freebie tees.
Kanye, however, has only adopted the trait recently – probably to consistently show off new Yeezy Boosts that no one else can get their hands on. As we saw with the souvenir jacket, you don’t have to do it first to be best, but can you imagine Shia without his signature sock situation? No, you can’t. Ring the bell referee – the final round is all Shia’s.
