NYFW AW16: street style
By Matt Glazebrook, 19 February 2016
It's women's fashion week in the Big Apple, which means the small proportion of stylish New Yorkers who aren't still standing around in Madison Square Garden while Kanye plays his new album have been out and about, braving the chill and showing off their sprezziest garms. Here's a few of our favourite couture couples.

One of the surprising developments at the AW16 shows is the emergence of the skate hoodie as the cosy cover-up of the choice for the fashion set. This guy's companion has gone full skate rat in her grey Thrasher top, whereas he's showing the exact intersection of the half-pipe and catwalk with his Commes Des Garçons take on the classic overhead hoodie paired with the AW16-approved combo of an overcoat and super longline layers.

The Arctic weather has been hard enough for the NYFW showgoers, hovering around in the cold hoping to get fash-papped, before retreating into the warmth of the show venues. But spare a thought for the street-style photographers themselves – required to dress well enough to mingle incognito with the industry insiders but warm enough to survive hours of outdoor exposure. The smart snapper's solution? Heavyweight parka action.

It only feels like yesterday we declared clashing plaid layers were the new big thing and this early adopter has already combined the look into a single statement shirt from the future. Mr AW16 in his hoodie and overcoat can barely keep up.

Award for the least coordinated twosome at NYFW goes to these crazy cats. What do you think they're talking about? 'Man, I'm sure we agreed on super-fresh, old-school hip-hop double denim plus boho jewellery and all the layering.' 'But it's Thursday. We always do off-duty Cruella De Vil on Thursdays.'

That's more like it. ASOS Insider Alice Barbier and her fella rocking about 51 shades of grey between them, mixing up smart and streetwear, men's and womenswear, in a perfectly complementary mélange of wintertime style. All that and a great big cosy scarf, too.
