Style Evolution: Wiz Khalifa
By Matt Glazebrook, 8 September 2015
Wiz Khalifa turns 27 today. But what will hip-hop’s most enthusiastic masher up of high and low fashion wear for his big celebratory dinner? We’ve had a rummage through his style back catalogue and come up with a few ideas.
Wiz’s early sartorial exploits tended towards relaxed skater gear and vests that showed off his prodigious body art, including this excellent roaring bear number, which we briefly (but, sadly, inaccurately) thought bore the legend 'Taylor Swift'.
An army brat, Khalifa lived all over the world before settling in his beloved Pittsburgh. This cosmopolitan upbringing perhaps goes some way to explaining his eclectic dress sense, which incorporates elements from the worlds of hip-hop, sportswear, punk, the skate scene, high fashion and more – occasionally, as with this weird-but-it-works early 2014 getup, all in the space of a single outfit.
While ace casualwear is his home turf, the rapper brings strong deconstructed formalwear game, too. Check out his excellent pairing of a crisp white smart shirt with a white bomber jacket on a May 2014 red carpet, complemented by black Chelsea boots, destroyed black skinny jeans and a black-clad sexy alien android invader (aka then-wife Amber Rose).
At other times, it’s all about simple, casual cool – just like this smart retro graphic tee worn with a skinny denim jacket and denim shorts.
Khalifa loves a dandy affectation as much as the next fashion-week-frequenting rap megastar, but when he does dial it way down – as with this normcore-inspired late 2014 look – it’s equally effective. Librarian cardigans FTW.
