Ways to wear: smart joggers
By Libby Banks, 25 July 2015
Sweatpants – those comfy couch staples – have manoeuvred their way into the fashion world and we're not complaining. But before you dig out that pair lurking at the bottom of your gym bag, a cautious note –today’s smart joggers are altogether different beasts from their saggier cousins. Since they first appeared on the spring catwalks a few seasons ago, the styles and materials have been trending ever more upscale. The cut is tapered at the ankle and closer fitting for a leaner, tailored, more flattering appearance. The good news? Get it right and you won’t look like a man who's given up on getting dressed. Hell, you can even wear them to the office.
Kanye West is the patron saint of structured joggers – fact. He even got into a spat with the fashion world by claiming he invented leather sweatpants, but that’s another story. If you want to work your sweatpants with a decent dose of street vibe, do as Yeezy does and play with layers and proportion. Try sticking to longline cuts and experiment with similar tones. Structured joggers are perfect partners for classic military pieces so feel free to mix it right up.
No longer condemned to post-workout chilling or hungover Sundays, dressed-up sweatpants can also work in the office with minimal effort. Sticking to monochrome pieces is the easiest way to keep the look tight and slick, and you can balance out the casual bottoms with a crisp shirt done right up. Just don’t overcompensate with a tie – that would be ridiculous. Similarly, overly smart leather shoes would be overdoing it, so try a pair of slip-on plimsolls instead. Job done.
The ultimate off-duty uniform, simple logoed structured joggers are an excellent alternative to jeans and a budget-friendly way to change up your look. The reasons for switching to well-cut joggers are compelling –awesome levels of comfort, easy style and an elasticated waist that you can wear without fear of judgement. Don’t be afraid to play with colour, and team with a T-shirt and bomber for an elevated but relaxed look. Finish with fresh white trainers, obviously.
