Can you do socks + sandals?
By Gavin Jewkes, 12 June 2015
No one was more surprised than us to see sliders slither their way out of sartorial obscurity to become the footwear choice of summer 2014. Not to mention the fact that wearing them with socks – an act previously considered one of the more aggressive forms of fashion faux pas – became unequivocally de rigueur. A year on, however, and the anti-fashion trend is still going strong. And this summer, it’s less about sporty sliders and more about sophisticated slip-ons, constructed from quality materials in monochrome and metallics (bear with us…).
True, in your old man's hands, socks and sliders can look awful – there's no denying that. The key thing is to avoid pulling them on with some bulky cargo shorts and an ill-fitting polo, like he might, and instead wear them with a modern, ice-cool monochrome outfit. Perhaps even with some basketball shorts and a longline vest. Who knows – it’s summer, you can do what you like, right?!
For the more sartorially intrepid among you, consider switching your athletic socks for a novelty pair. Not only does this ensure your style is almost worryingly on point for 2015, but it also shows you have a terrific sense of humour.
