Hairstyle of the week #16
By Gavin Jewkes, 10 June 2015
Nothing heralds the arrival of summer like a sea of sun-beaten faces flooding the office after a weekend of beer garden-hopping and barbecues. But in the world of celebrity, where sporting a suntan is a basic year-round requisite, the shaving off of one’s hair is the true sign that summer has finally begun.
Like a human barometer, then, Nick Jonas’ freshly shorn bonce sets the tone in terms of low-maintenance, seasonally appropriate haircuts and has landed him our coveted hairstyle of the week title, while welcoming the season in style.
A military-inspired buzz cut like this is the no-brainer option for guys with the angular bone structure to carry it off. Not only does an all-over shave save you precious morning minutes formerly spent on styling, but it also keeps your head cool and frizz-free when the heat and humidity really kick in.
However, there’s a tendency to over stylise the buzz cut by squaring off the hairline in a severe, Action Man-esque manner. For a softer, more natural finish, ask your barber to use the same grade all over and then create a slight fade into the hairline by taking things a grade shorter on the back and sides. Alternatively, take a DIY approach to your summer grooming and check out our video guide to shaving your own head.
