There’s a fine line between looking artfully scruffy and looking a slob. Of course, more often than not, that line is a shower and the intervention of a washing machine and iron. In the right hands, however, clothes that fit poorly, have seen better days or look like they’ve been peeled off the bedroom floor can be assembled into excellent outfits. Just take a look at a few of our favourite scruffy yet stylish celebs below.
A guide to scruffy style

R-Patz is a notoriously snappy dresser but, thanks to his tendency to slouch and unbutton his suit jacket, he rarely looks that polished – always refreshing in an A-lister. And here he is cutting something of a nomadic figure in the kind of getup one might expect to find on an Interrailing student (note how he’s accessorised with a suspiciously light-looking/empty suitcase). Not only is it a prime example of how scruffy can look really fresh, but also a masterclass in how to play with proportions. Big trousers on skinny guys = win.
For a man who’s become synonymous with expertly fitted tailoring and single-handedly reviving the fortune of the brown suit, Ryan Gosling does scruffy especially well. This effortlessly cool grungy bomber, hoodie and skele-tee combo is a far cry from his red-carpet game – which is always tight as – but we’re into it, because he wouldn’t look out of place stepping off a tour bus reeking of booze and cheap perfume (in absolutely the coolest way possible).
We can’t look at Gyllenhaal in the same way since he creeped us out in Nightcrawler with those sunken cheeks, bulging eyes and sorry-lookin’ topknot. That said, the man’s outfit game is strong, so we’ll keep paying attention. This bomber, black jeans and sneaks arrangement is the perfect courtside look. But he scruffed it up with an unkempt beard and scraped-up hair, which shows he wants to keep things real and not go full-on Hollywood.
Is it the world’s coolest grandma? Nah, son – it’s Black And Yellow lovin’ Wiz Khalifa. The spindly rapper is a Style Feed favourite thanks to his penchant for ripped jeans, killer biker jacket and chilled-out vibe. And we’ve entered him into this rundown because he does his low-key looks like a pro, too. Making cardigans cool again, he’s slung his over a tissue-thin tee and a pair of jeans that it looks as though the moths have been at them. Sure, it’s scruffy as heck, but the man looks great.
