New In: Levi’s 501 CT
By Gavin Jewkes, 6 March 2015
In its 162-year history, Levi’s has become synonymous with quality denim, producing handsome, hard-wearing jeans for everyone from saddle-weary cowboys to crotch-thrusting rock stars. But while many of its styles have stood the test of time, others have fallen in and out of favour. One such style is the Levi’s 501, which was big news back in Springsteen’s 60s heyday but all but disappeared until the early 90s, when the cast of Friends rescued it from relative sartorial obscurity. And now the 501, like a denim boomerang, is back again, but has been brought bang up to date (and, therefore, is hopefully here to stay) with a new tapered-leg option.
The 501 CT (those initials stand for customised and tapered, of course), offers the same robust style that marks it out as Levi’s classic, but the refreshed cut gives whoever pulls on a pair a more streamlined, contemporary silhouette that narrows toward the ankles.
They still boast a long rise and relaxed fit around the waist and thighs, so are perfect for men who don’t want jeans that wrap around them like a second skin. And, crucially, they come in a variety of washes, so you can grab a pair in whatever shade suits your mood. Wear yours with a pair of white Converse for that all-American vibe, or – given how versatile these babies are – try hardening them up with a pair of Dr Martens, too.
