How do you look smart without wearing a suit? Well, provided the club or host hasn’t laid down a needlessly exacting dress code, there are plenty of ways to look vaguely distinguished while eschewing the sartorial restrictions of traditional formal gear. Try the outfit below, for instance, which offers a more relaxed take on smart wear.
Look smart without a suit

Exchanging your suit in favour of a jumper and jeans may sound like crazy talk, but it’s a simple, comfortable way to look fire, defy expectations and kick your outfit’s personality levels up a gear. The key thing here, though, is to keep to a monochromatic colour palette. Constructing an outfit from darker shades looks minimal and sophisticated and means, despite sticking two fingers up to stuffiness, you don’t stand out like a sore thumb.
Layer a white Oxford shirt underneath the jumper and add a pair of well-polished black leather loafers and a black overcoat to finish things off. These classic formalwear elements help bring the more contemporary elements of your outfit back from the brink of looking too casual. Simply put, it’s a look that threatens the suit’s extinction.
