Style Icon: Christian Slater
By Matt Glazebrook, 12 March 2015
Christian Slater’s 1989 performance as skateboarding slacker turned amateur murder investigator Brian Kelly might not have set the cinematic world alight (a New York Times review at the time praised the actor for seeming 'confident and alert throughout') but Gleaming The Cube remains notable for two main reasons.
There’s the slew of OG skate heroes who served as stuntmen and made cameo appearances in the film (including Bones Brigade members Tony Hawk and Tommy Guerrero), lending it legit scene cred (if not plot plausibility). And then there’s Slater’s sweet and supremely stealable late 80s punk-rock steez.

A street-fresh update of 80s/90s grunge layering is bang on trend right now (we’re calling it Rock Luxe) and Gleaming offers a pretty much nailed-on starter kit. You’ve got your graphic band tee (New York trash punk legends The Cramps, in this case), a casual checked shirt on top and some black jeans adorned with band badges (peep our patch styling guide here).
Then all you need to do is cop some Converse kicks, hit the hair bleach (optional) and you’re primed to land some sick kick-flips at the nearest empty Los Angeles swimming pool. Or, you know, just look ace at the pub.
