Three ways: ripped jeans
By Luke Raymond, 28 February 2015
A rock 'n' roll constant since the pure punk era of the 70s, ripped denim ran riot through 80s hair metal, 90s grunge and noughties indie, and remains relevant today thanks to Hedi Slimane’s luxurious riff on rebellion at Parisian fashion house Saint Laurent.
Proving that you no longer have to be a rock star with a bad reputation, a confessional diary or a vast array of mohair knits to wear ripped jeans, here we show you how to dress-up the cool-kid staple for all occasions.

Grunge
To go classically Kurt Cobain, pair your ripped blue denims with a longline white T-shirt. Add a distressed grey knit jumper for a true homage to the Nirvana frontman. High-top Converse keep things punky while crisp, clean turn-ups and a straight-leg fit balance out the double distress.
Day-to-day
Equip your damaged denim for everyday wear and pair them with a set of understated basics. An olive-green bomber jacket gives a subtle (but still smart) nod to skinhead history, while the double hit of a grey crew-neck sweat, white tee and slip-on plimsolls add an effortlessly put-together edge.
90s normcore
Looking for something a bit more smart/casj? Soften up distressed textures with a crisp white shirt and pair with a slogan sweatshirt for a sly 90s reference. A lightweight mac lends a slick (and spring weather-appropriate) touch while some Adidas trainers underline a cool, calm and collected look.
