The king of rock'n'roll style
By Matt Glazebrook, 8 October 2015
Today would have been Elvis Presley's 80th birthday, so what better way to celebrate this landmark than by donning an outfit inspired by the King? Now, where did we put our tiger-print tasselled jumpsuit…
Actually, while Vegas-era Elvis produced some killer tunes (hello, Suspicious Minds), the only Presley style moment you need to pay attention to came right at the other end of his career, when a ruggedly suave young greaser from Tupelo, Mississippi, first turned up at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.
Mid-50s Elvis Presley rocked a style that was as mean, cool and dangerous as his earliest rockabilly records (think Mystery Train and Baby, Let's Play House). He wore western shirts or short-sleeved button downs with rolled cuffs, oversized jackets and gold rings, and paired the whole thing with a loose, tough guy quiff and a handsomely insolent sneer. And with the rockabilly vibe very much a thing in 2015, it's a style that you can easily adapt for your own 'looking super cool' purposes today.
First you'll want a proper slice of 50s Americana in the form of a short-sleeved, snap-button Western shirt. Next you'll need a pair of tapered blue jeans, rolled at the bottom to expose your socks, and your best leather dancing loafers. Finish the whole greaser getup with a biker jacket, plenty of hair product and a little upper lip curl.
