Long-haired looks for dudes
By Matt Glazebrook, 29 January 2015
You know what's hot right now? Long hair on dudes. You know what's in no way a hassle-free grooming trend...?
There's the tricky and tedious growing out stage. The several extra minutes of brushing and hair-drying added to your morning routine. The question of what to do with it when you're playing sport or having a less-than-glossy locks day (answer: a man bun, obvs). That awkward moment when someone mistakes you for a girl from behind (pro tip: laugh it off. They're more embarrassed about the mix-up than you are. Like spiders and fear).
But stick with it and you'll soon be stepping out in style, looking like a member of a cool new band, and prompting raging bouts of #hairenvy in all your female friends. Great stuff. To inspire you on your journey to lush follicular excess, here's our countdown of the five finest exponents of the long-hair game right now.
Ever since George Best first brought football kicking and screaming into the swinging 60s (in about 1969) when he started his letting his mop and sideburns run free, the beautiful game has featured some beautiful hair (albeit often carved into a mullet or scraped behind an Alice band). Italy is probably ground zero for quality on-pitch tresses and the undisputed king of the hirsute Azzurri is veteran midfield maestro and professional brooder Andrea Pirlo.
Young Harry has always made a feature of his thick, curly mop, but it's only very recently that he's started growing it out into a proper rockstar mane. And, like most things the pop princeling adorns himself with – from killer Burberry clobber to badly-drawn tattoos – the new 'do has only enhanced his general air of sartorial accomplishment.
'I don't care if you blue or you red flagging, hair swinging, my pants sagging', rapped A$AP Rocky on Live. Love. A$AP. cut Brand New Guy, and the style prince of hip-hop has kept his word in the four years since that mixtape dropped. A$AP favours an elaborately braided style for his mid-length locks, but lets a section or two hang loose to frame his face for a swish/relaxed mix that mirrors his enviable wardrobe.
One to watch in both the acting and having-cool-long-hair fields, the Girls star has delivered a fun cameo in Inside Llewyn Davis and scored a role in an upcoming little film called 'The new freaking Stars Wars film' within the past year or two. He's also developed a rather fine curly, Musketeer-esque mane. Exciting times.
No one has done more for the fashionability of super-long dude hair than Jared Leto. His sleek locks look incredible whether paired with a vest and shorts for a sort of hippie-luxe vibe, or adding a edgy contrast to a sharp awards ceremony suit. Note: you'll need a healthy, thick, well-kept head of hair to rock this look (no split ends!). The bushy beard and beatific smile are optional.
