Celebrity airport swag
By Matt Glazebrook, 25 January 2015
Apparently, for reasons that seem to defy the laws of time, space and general fairness, it’s still January. And it’s becoming increasingly clear that the only solution might be to make a break for warmer climes.
Just look at our old friends the A-listers: they’ve spent much of the past month jetting from tropical resort to swanky awards do and back again. And while we can’t hope to match their premium economy seats (like, minimum) or their Caribbean destinations, we can learn a thing or two from their airport swag, because there’s nothing worse than turning up at the check-in desk in less than fire garms. Nothing.
What to wear when your bleary-eyed shuffle through arrivals includes a gauntlet-run of screaming fans and camera-toting paparazzi? If you’re Harry Styles, the hardest working man in the looking stylish business, the answer is all the accessories – hat, scarves, necklaces and the all-important rockstar shades. Never off duty, that boy.
For a slightly comfier take on fashion-forward flying, we turn to football’s Daniel Sturridge. Trackies and trainers are ripe for an in-flight doze, but the longline hoodie leaves him ready to step straight from plane seat to outdoor table at a fashionable Miami hotel bar.
More streetwear steez at 30,000 feet above the street from American pop star Austin Mahone. But as befits a man with eight million Twitter followers, his is just a little showier than Sturridge’s all-black errthang. Boxfresh white kicks paired with a similarly crisp white skater tee, loose-fitting trousers in a bandana print and a beanie we presume was knitted by his gran.
We’d wager no one in celebdom has racked up more air miles than Kanye West and Kim Kardashian over the past year or two and – unsurprisingly – their airport swag is expertly composed. Kanye’s Adidas hoodie, oversized tee and Chelsea boots combo is a cool, cosy win, and we imagine Kim will lend him her furry jacket if he needs an extra pillow during the flight.
We get it, sometimes all you want to do on a plane is sleep. And if that’s the case, why not be like Snoop Dogg and go full lounge-luxe – fur coat, matching sweatshirt and joggers, headscarf, slippers. And is that a blanket under his arm? Hey Snoop, leave some comfy for the rest of us.
