Introducing... Dark Future
By Luke Raymond, 8 December 2014
What: Dark Future is your uniform for 2015 and beyond. A future-focused hybrid of faux-real digital prints, luxe sportswear and slick formalwear, it updates summer's longline shapes and lightweight jerseys for the brooding winter months.
Why: Dark Future aligns the biggest menswear trends of the moment. A collision of smart sport looks – think A$AP Rocky/Frank Ocean/Calvin Klein’s upscale ‘Collection’ line – and bold but approachable prints introduced by top Scandi brands such as Wood Wood, Soulland and Acne, this is menswear for the future, and you can lead the way.
Wear: A marble print shirt is your go-to. Team with slimline black formal trousers, a neoprene sweatshirt and a lightweight parka to strike that smart/sport balance. Clashing print accessories – we’re talking a camouflage baseball cap and/or rucksack – and some quality high-top sneaks nail the street vs military attitude at Dark Future’s core.
Watch: David Lynch’s 1984 Sci-Fi flop Dune involving barren desert planets, a life-extending spice and sonic weapons called Weirding Molecules. Alternatively, the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron is probably a better touchstone for post-apocalyptic antics.
Ideally we’d plump for the Moon or Mars – anywhere rocky and rough of terrain in the solar system. But until universal space travel gets off the ground, either channel it through your computer screen – very Dark Future – or head to Japan, flitting between futuristic Tokyo and the rough, mountainous ranges surrounding Mount Fuji.
