Bill + Ted's Excellent Outfits
By Matt Glazebrook, 18 November 2014
Alex Winter set internet hearts a flutter a few weeks ago when he filled in a host of details about the long-rumoured return of Bill and Ted, some 24 years after their last cinematic outing. It's an apt time for Winter and Keanu Reeves' time-travelling Californians to make their long awaited comeback – after decades in the stylistic wilderness, the San Dimas dudes' slacker chic is looking pretty cool again.
Sartorially, the original two movies (Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey) occupied the tricky no man's land between 80s hair metal and 90s grunge. As we're not going to advocate sporting a waistcoat over a Van Halen T-shirt with shorts (as Keanu Reeves does in the first flick), nor Alex Winter's cropped, midriff-baring sweatshirt, we've picked the sequel as our unlikely fashion inspiration. Darker and weirder than the original (how many teen stoner comedies feature Ingmar Bergman parodies?), the Bogus Journey look was a little less goofy and a lot more achievable.
Statement high-top trainers are the bedrock of both get-ups, emulated here by Nike's new retro-cool SneakerBoot silhouette. For Bill we've added a classic buffalo check shirt in green, worn open in the grunge fashion and layered over a classic crew. Ted's threads were even more layer-tastic, with shirt, tee and sawn-off jacket all present and correct in fetching shades of red. With the 90s revival going nowhere fast, this comfy, colourful and casual approach could be an ideal way of looking excellent (guitar riff) this winter.
