Which tie with which shirt?
By Gavin Jewkes, 3 October 2014
Lady-killing vocal acrobat Justin Timberlake has already sung beautiful words about the humble suit and tie. What he fails to address, however, is the tricky task of matching your neckwear to your shirt.
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to tying up, but achieving the right combination of patterns and colours can leave some of us at a loss. That’s why we’ve drafted in ASOS personal stylist James – a man who knows his sartorial oats and, moreover, has a fine-tuned eye when it comes to formalwear. Check out his guide to shirt and tie combinations below.
James says: “When you’re wearing a shirt that has collar details and sharp tips like this one, opt for something skinny and simple to complement the collar.”
James says: “See a traditional white shirt as a blank canvas. Absolutely any tie will go with this shirt, so this is a great time to show your personality. Go bold and bright or subtle and sophisticated – it’s up to you.”
James says: “Don’t fret when it comes to pairing a tie with a patterned shirt. Just pick the boldest colour on the shirt and match your neckwear to that for a smart finish.”
James says: "Simple accessories are a great way to liven up an otherwise basic shirt and tie combination. A collar bar, for example, will spice things up nicely."
