STYLE ADVICE
Check, mate
By Alistair Mulhall, 27 August 2014
A checked shirt certainly isn’t breaking news when it comes to menswear but it’s most definitely an item worth celebrating. Ever since fashion designer Hedi Slimane sent check shirts down a Parisian runway for Saint Laurent last year, checks have been making their way back up to the top of the style hit parade.
With that in mind, we’ve collated this countdown of famous men who’ve worn or are still wearing check well. Think of it as inspiration for summer and a reminder of just how good a checked shirt can make you look.

A$AP Rocky
We have to take our snapbacks off to a man who accessorises his check shirt with a toasted sandwich. All jokes aside, the yellow, black and red combo was a 90s favourite for good reason. Here, rapper A$AP makes it look fresh for a new era. And a new sandwich.

Robert Pattinson
He introduced the checked shirt to a whole new generation of tweens during his time as a vampire in the Twilight franchise. Now R-Patz wears his with cool sunnies and scruffier jackets.

Charlie Hunnam in Sons Of Anarchy
Let’s not forget that the check shirt has also been part of the American biker’s uniform. Make like Hunnam in the hit US TV show Sons Of Anarchy and wear yours with rough, tough leathers. Avoid bar fights though, obviously.

Jared Leto in My So-Called Life
Leto as Jordan Catalano was love at first sight for an audience of teen girls in the 90s but for the fellas, he became a style icon. Take note then of looser fit check flannel shirts worn over white T-shirts. He wore his with a choker style necklace, but you don't have to.

Ice Cube
Meanwhile over in Compton, rapper and NWA member Ice Cube was flying the flag for the hip-hop inspired take on the check shirt. You’ll have to wear yours with a cap and a super-low hanging pair of jeans to really get the look.
