Instagram's best dressed
By Gavin Jewkes, 16 July 2014
Over the years, these guardians of men’s fashion have made enough sartorial missteps to know exactly what doesn’t suit them. Equally, they’ve triumphed in plenty of handsome outfits, and have, as a result, honed their look to establish a watertight sense of style.
It’s this robust knowledge of how to dress that has turned menswear’s elder statesmen into big hitters on Instagram. They demonstrate on a daily basis that men of a certain vintage should embrace their age rather than defy it by flirting with the wider reaches of fashion and faddy trends.
Take a look at our top five best-dressed men over 40 on Instagram – where timeless style and crisp, clean lines rule. Oh, and there’s not a whiff of a midlife crisis in sight.
Being Italian, Gianfrate is, of course, suave by nature. The owner of one of Italy’s largest fashion showrooms, Gianfrate Rappresentanze, he keeps himself busy playing host to the world’s strongest design talent during the course of Pitti Immagine Uomo – the country’s biannual menswear showcase. He’s also the darling of street-style photographers, thanks to his impeccable taste in suits, penchant for peacoats and unwavering panache.
Nick Wooster’s Instagram followers harbour a massive digital man-crush for him. And when you cast an eye over his feed, it’s not hard to see why. A Bergdorf alumni, Wooster is hard-wired with an acute knowledge of how men of all ages should dress. He regularly champions cropped trousers, which proves that, when done right, you don’t have to be in your teens to get away with contemporary cuts.
Like Gianfrate, Squarzi is the director and owner of a renowned Italian men’s fashion showroom. But he’s also so much more than that. Take one brief swipe down his Instagram feed and you’ll see that he’s here to buck stereotypes and let the world know just what it means to dress better than men half your age, with half the effort. Check him out for inspiration on what to wear if you’re heading to a boat party on the Riviera this summer…
Pask is men’s fashion director at a little shop on New York’s Fifth Avenue called Bergdorf Goodman – a labyrinth of designer labels and one of the world’s most luxurious department stores. So it should come as no surprise that its maestro of menswear keeps his Instagram feed updated with behind-the-scenes looks at new collections, in addition to snaps of his own rather covetable wardrobe. If nothing else, Pask’s feed makes a strong case for the importance of quality tailoring, favouring brands like J Crew for classic suits updated with modern twists.
The Godfather of street style, Schuman’s blog The Sartorialist captures some of the world’s best-dressed men (and women) about town. But his style game is just as strong as his subjects’. Steering clear of colour isn’t a prerequisite for advancing years, but Schuman’s loyalty to a darker, pared-down palette ensures he’s always looking smart, unassuming and refined.
